Houston bested Florida 1-0 in a pitching duel which saw Roy Oswalt and Brad Lidge combined for a 5 hitter vs. Dontrelle Willis and the Florida bullpen.

The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 3-2, behind Tom Glavine, with Bill Wagner’s first save, in another tight game on Opening Night.

The Colorado Rockies bested the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in a tight game which went eleven innings.
In the meantime, the Atlanta Braves held off the rallying L.A. Dodgers for an 11-10 victory in a slugfest.

There were three blowouts, the Chicago Cubs routed the Cincinnati Reds 16-7 with a 7 run sixth inning, the New York Yankees demolished the Oakland Athletics 15-2 on 17 hits, including a 3 for 5, 5 RBI night for A-Rod and the St. Louis Cardinals clobbered the Philadelphia Phillies 13-5 before a crowd of 44,614 in Philadelphia. In this game, St. Louis hit 3 homers, including Scott Rolen’s grand slam capping an 8 run 4th inning and 2 homers (4 RBIs) for Albert Pujols. The Phillies got solo homers by Pat Burrell and Ryan Howard. Chris Carpenter got his first victory while Josh Lieber took the loss after getting clubbed for 8 runs in 3 1/3 innings.
