Detroit, Boston, Oakland, the New York Mets and Milwaukee have gotten out of the box with sprints, while the Yankees, Minnesota, Texas, Pittsburgh and the Phillies have yet to leave the starting blocks.
In the American League;
The Detroit Tigers are undefeated in this young season, having taken 3 from the Texas Rangers with todays game being the get-away which Texas hopes to salvage. The Tigers beat them 14-3, 10-6 and 5-2 so far in the series.
Oakland, after losing their series opener to Seattle 6-2, won the next 2 games over the Mariners 5-0, 3-0 with today being the get-away game. Oakland hopes to take 3 of 4 while Seattle hopes to salvage a split.
The Boston Red Sox are hot out of the box with a 4-1 start with Curt Schilling leading them with 2 wins. Boston took 2 of 3 games from Texas and have beaten Baltimore 14-8 and 2-1 in the first 2 games of their series with tonight being the get-away game.
In the meantime, the Yankees and Minnesota have both won have won but 1 of the 5 games that they have played.
The Yanks, after clobbering the Oakland A’s 15-2 on opening night, lost the next 2 games of their series and have lost the first 2 to the L.A. Angels 4-1 and 3-2. Today is the rubber game betwen them and the Yanks hope to right themselves with a victory.
Minnesota, after winning 1 out of the 3 games played with Toronto (13-4), have lost the first 2 games to Cleveland 11-6, 3-0. The Twins hope to salvage the get-away and not fall deeper into a hole.
In the National League;
The Milwaukee Brewers are a huge surprise out of the starting blocks ndefeated at 5-0. They swept the Pitsburgh Pirates in 3 and have won the first 2 games of their series with Arizona by 3-1 and 5-4. This afternoon the teams play the rubber game of the series.
The New York Mets play the Florida Marlins today in the get-away game. Yesterday’s game between them was rained out. The Mets took the opening game of the series by a 9-3 score.
Both the Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates are winless, the Phillies at 0-4, Pittburgh at 0-6.
The Phils were swept in their 3 game series with St. Louis and then lost the first game of the series to the L.A. Dodgers. Yesterday’s game with the Dodgers was cancelled because of rain and so the 2 teams play a doubleheader today. Jimmy Rollins, who saw his hitting streak end at 38 games, has now hit in 2 straight as he singled to center to leadoff the opening game of the doubleheader. The Phillies start is particularly shocking because the seemed to have such a great spring training winning 20 while losing 11.
Pittsburgh, who has lost the 3 games thus far in their series with the Cincinnati Reds 6-5, 7-6 and 11-9 are playing the get-away game today. Both the Phils and Pittsburgh hope to end today in the victory column.
