BoSox Back on Track, Brett Myers, Ron Howard Solo Blast = Phils 5th Win 1-0, Pedro Martinez Puts Mets in Orbit

The Boston Red Sox sit astride the AL East behind power pitching of Josh Beckett in a 3-2 win over Seattle on Sunday night with Jonathan Papelbon recording his 6th save and a come from behind 7-6 victory over the Mariners on a Mark Loretta 2-run blast in the bottom of the 9th.

The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians are tied for the lead in the AL Central with identical 8-5 marks. The White Sox got the best pitching performance of the young season thus far from starter Jose Contreras (2-0) who pitched 7 innings combining with relievers Boone Logan and Cliff Politte to one-hit the Kansas City Royals (2-10) in a 9-0 shutout.

In the AL West, the L.A. Angels and the Oakland A’s are both tied for first place with 6-7 marks while Seattle and Texas are 6-8, 5-8 respectively.
The Mets sit high atop the NL East with a 10-2 record having won 9 of their last 10 games. On Sunday night, they exploded for a 5 spot in the bottom of the 8th keyed by a 3 run shot by Carlos Delgado, his 4th of the season, to break open a 4-3 game with the Milwaukee Brewers. Last night, Pedro Martinez took over as the Mets defeated Atlanta 4-3, Pedro pitching 6 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. Bill Wagner registered his 4th save. Delgado belted a 2 run blast in the bottom of the 3rd. Twelve games into the season, Delgado already has 5 homers, 14 RBIs and a .375 average.

The Phillies continued their climb to .500 and to the plus side with both a clutch pitching performance by Brett Myers who pitched 7 1/3 innings collaborating with Arthur Rhodes and Tom Gordon (4th save) and a clutch Ryan Howard solo shot in the 7th inning in a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The Phils won 2 of 3 from the Rockies and are currently in 3rd place in the NL East with a 5-7 mark.

The Houston Astros sit atop the NL Central with a 9-4 mark followed by the Chicago Cubs at 8-4 with St. Louis and Cincinnati following with 8-5 marks.
The San Fancisco Giants head the NL West with an 8-4 mark followed closely by the Colorado Rockies at 7-6.
