Phils Lose Tight Opener to Brewers, Mets Beat St. Louis, ChiSox, Detroit Tied for AL Central Lead, Yanks, Rangers in Wild One

In the National League East, the Phillies, in losing a tight 3-2 game on Tuesday night to the Milwaukee Brewers lost a full game of ground last night to the NL East leading New York Mets who defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 in St. Louis.

Both starters, Cory Lidle (3-4) and Chris Capuano (4-3) pitched well through their 6 and 7 innings respectively although neither was involved in the decision as the winning run scored for the Brewers in the 9th on Phils reliever  Ryan Franklin’s throwing error.   Franklin (1-3), of course, was tagged with the loss, while Brewers reliever Derrick Turnbow (1-1) notched the win for Milwaukee.

The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to see the Cards tie it up with 2 runs in the 5th and 1 in the sixth.  The Mets followed with 1 run in the 7th followed by 4 in the 8th as they defeated the Cards behind the 6 innings of work by winner Tom Glavine (6-2) for an 8-3 win.   St. Louis starter Jeff Suppan (4-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings and took the loss.

In the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers are now tied for 1st place, both with the best records in baseball at 25-13.

Chicago was upended by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays by a 10-7 score.  The Ray jumped out to a 10-1 lead after 7 innings, featuring solo back-to-back homers by Ty Wiggington (10th HR) and Toby Hall (4th HR) in the 2nd inning, and held on for the win as the White Sox made it closer by scoring 6 in the 8th inning featuring a 2 run homer for Jim Thome (16 HR) followed immediately by Paul Konerko’s (9 HR) solo blast.  Devil Rays starter Scott Kazmir (6-2) notched the win and closer Tyler Walker (0-3, S6) got credit for the save. White Sox starter Brandon McCarthy (2-2) took the loss.

As Chicago was losing, the Detroit Tigers were beating the Minnesota Twins 7-4 behind starter Nate Robertson (4-2) with a save for closer Todd Jones (0-1, S10).  Minnesota starter Kyle Lohse (2-4) took the loss.

In another American League game, one of the wildest games so far this year, the New York Yankees charged back from 9-0 and 10-1 deficits to defeat the  Texas Rangers in New York by a 14-13 score.  As huge deficits were blown away by the Yanks in winning this game, neither starter was involved in the decision, 3 Texas relievers and 1 Yankee reliever blew save opportunities and Yanks perennial closer Mariano Rivera (1-2, S7) recorded the win and Rangers Closer Akinori Otsuka (0-1, S5, BS1) got hung with the loss.  The two teams collectively scored 27 runs on 34 hits.

Hank Blalock (8 HR, .333 BA) hit a 3 run homer in the 2nd inning and Brad Wilkerson (6 HR) hit a 2 run homer in the 7th for the Rangers.

Derek Jeter (5 HR, .349 BA) hit a 3 run shot in the 6th inning and Jorge Posada (6 HR, .297 BA) hit the game winning 2 run homer in the 9th inning for the Yankees.
