As was previously written, just a week ago today, the Phillies had just won their 9th straight and looked poised to storm through the MIlwaukee Brewers
and head home to give Boston a run for it’s money while full-court pressing the New York Mets for 1st place in the NL East as the Mets prepared for their cross-town rival Yankees.

But in the process, the Phils found that their bullpen couldn’t hold the opposition and developed a proclivity for blowing leads.  They lost all 3 of their games to the Brewers by heartbreak scores and went into the Boston series back in Philadelphia where, on Friday, the Red Sox beat the Phils 5-3 in the opener.

The Red Sox won behind 6 2/3 innings of effective pitching by starter Matt Clement (4-3), an early 5-1 Boston lead thanks to a 1st inning 2 run homer by Mike Lowell (5 HR, 3 for 3 on Friday and .331 BA), a solo homer by Jason Varitek (4 HRs) in the 4th and a 2 run homer by David Ortiz (14 HRs, 38 RBIs) in the 5th.

Shane Victorino (2 HRs) clubbed a solo blast for the Phils in the 4th inning and Chase Utley doubled, driving in 2 Philly runs in the 7th to wrap up the scoring.  Jonathan Papelbon (0-1, S15) was credited with the save. Phils starter Jon Lieber (3-5) who gave up all 5 Boston runs was charged with the loss.

On Saturday night, the Phils got out to a 1-0 lead on Chase Utley’s (9 HR, 29 RBIs, .299 BA) solo HR in the 3rd inning off of Boston starter Josh Beckett (6-1) and 1 hit pitching by starter Brett Myers (2-2) through 5 innings.  However, in the 6th inning, Myers and the Phils fell apart giving up 4 runs as opposing pitcher Beckett, in helping his own cause, singled in Boston’s first run. Beckett helped himself more with a solo homer in the 7th inning, as Boston scored 2 more runs.  Shortstop Alex Gonzalez (2 HRs) capped off Boston’s scoring in the 8th with a two-run blast.  Ryan Howard (13 HRs, 33 RBIs, .295 BA) clouted a 3 run homer in the Phillies 8th inning off of Beckett but the Phils could come no closer as relievers Julian Tavares and Mike Timlin (3-0) shut the door on the Phils in the 8th and 9th innings.  The Phils, at 22-20 sit 3 full games behind the Mets in the NL East race.

So, the Phils hope today to salvage 1 game from the Boston series as Cory Lidle (3-4) starts for the Phils against Lenny DiNardo (1-1).

In the meantime, in New York the Yanks and Mets split the first 2 games of the 3 game series.  On Friday, the Mets beat the Yanks 7-6 as
closer
Billy Wagner (3-0, S8) was the winner in relief shutting down the Yanks in the 9th after the Mets held the Yanks scoreless in the previous 5 innings in after Mets starter Jeremi Gonzalez was tagged for 6 runs through the first 3 innings.  Yanks closer  Mariano Rivera (1-3, S8) took the loss for the Yanks.

On Saturday, the Yanks turned the tables on the Mets winning 5-4 in 11 innings.  Neither starter, Mike Mussina (6-1) nor Pedro Martinez (5-0) were in on the decision as the Mets blew a 4-0 lead.  Mariano Rivera (2-3) got the win for the Yanks while Jorge Julio (1-2, S1) was tagged with the loss for the Mets.

In today’s get-away game, Tom Glavine (6-2) goes for the Mets against Aaron Small (0-1) for the Yankees.

Hot off the presses; The Phils salvage 1 from the Red Sox by the score of 10-5 as they snapped their 5 game losing streak and as starter Cory Lidle (4-4) evened up his seasonal record.  For game recap and box score, click here.
