After losing 2 of 3 games to the Yankees, Boston rebounded quickly yesterday by winning their opening game with Tampa Bay by a 4-1 score, an impressive 6 inning outing for Josh Beckett (7-1) in winning his league-leading 7th game. Beckett’s 7 wins ties him with teammate Curt Schilling (7-2) and 3 others for the AL lead in games won.
The Red Sox showed yesterday that they could chip out runs just as well as putting up homers and power numbers in winning games. Boston closer, Jonathan Papelbon was credited with his AL leading 16th save of the season. Tampa Bay starter Doug Waechter (0-3) was charged with the loss.
In the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers (33-14) and Chicago White Sox (31-15) continue to be wrapped in a titanic struggle for the division lead, both teams possessing the best records in baseball. In the NL Central, the St. Louis Cardinals have the best NL mark at (31-16)
While the White Sox had a rest day on Thursday, Detroit survived falling behind to the Kansas City Royals 6-0 in the 1st inning and being behind 8-5 after 7 innings by scoring 3 in the 8th and 5 in the 9th innings to club the Royals by a 13-8 score.
