The Phillies hope to break even with the L.A. Dodgers in the get-away game of the 4 game series.

The Dodgers opened the series on Thursday by beating the Phils 7-2 behind 8 innings of shutout pitching by Dodger’s starter and winner Derek Lowe (4-3) and 2 relievers.   All the while, the Dodgers roughed up starter and loser Gavin Floyd (4-3) for 7 runs over 4 innings as centerfielder Matt Kemp (3 HRs) clubbed a 3 run shot in the 2nd inning and Russell Martin (2 HRs) and J.D. Drew (9 HRs) both homered in the 4th inning to round out the Dodger’s scoring.  Martin’s shot was a solo homer and J.D. Drew’s a 3 run homer.  The Phils attempted a comeback, scoring two in the 9th. The scoreless string put together by the Phils bullpen reached 15 1/3 innings.

In Friday’s game 2, the Phils got out to an early 3-0 lead on a Chase Utley (10 HRs, .319 BA, 4 for 4 for the game) solo homer in the 1st inning, a Bobby Abreu double in the 3rd and a Ryan Howard (19 HRs, 48 RBIs, .295 BA) solo blast in the 4th only to see the Dodgers take the lead 5-3 over the Phils with 2 in the 4th and 3 in the 5th as starter Ryan Madison (5-3) was tagged through 5 innings.  The Phils rallied back for 5 runs in the 7th inning off of losing pitcher Danys Baez (3-3, S9) who could retire no one in the 7th.   The Dodgers tried to get back into the game scoring 1 run in the 8th.

Neither Madison nor Dodger starter Jae Seo (2-3) were involved in the decision.  Phils reliever Geoff Geary (2-0) was the winner while Dodger Reliever Danys Baez was tagged with the loss.  The Phils bullpen scoreless string reached 17 1/3 innings before Arthur Rhodes (0-1, S1) gave up the Dodger run in the 8th.  Tom Gordon (2-2. S16) received credit for the save.

In Saturday’s game 3, the Dodgers broke out to an 8-0 lead after 7 innings as Dodger starter and winner Brad Penny (6-1) breezed through 6 innings of shutout ball while Phils starter and loser Eude Brito (0-1) was tagged for 6 of the Dodger’s 8 runs over the first 4 innings.  The Phils scored 2 scratch runs late but it was not near enough.  Final, Dodgers 8-2 over the Phils.

The Phils next meet one of the hotter NL teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks for 3 games in Arizona.
