The Phils went into today’s getaway game with the Washington Nationals hoping to salvage a split of their 4 game series.

As was last reported, the Phils arrived in Washington on Thursday after a cross-country flight from Arizona and dropped the first game to the Nationals by a 5-2 score.

On Friday, they lost a heart-wrenching 9-8 game in 12 innings.  It was an up-and-down affair as the Phils got off to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, dropped behind 3-2 in the Washington 2nd, tied the game in the 3rd on Ryan Howard’s (22 HR, 54 RBIs, .290 BA) solo shot, fell behind again 7-3 as the Nationals scored 3 in their 3rd and 1 in their 4th.  The Phils came back with 5 runs in their 7th on Chase Utley’s (12 HR, 40 RBIs, .308 BA) 3 run homer and  Pat Burrell’s (15 HRs, 45 RBIs) 2 run homer to take an 8-7 lead.  The Nationals promptly scratched out the tying run in their 7th.

The game went to the 12th inning before Washington plated the winning run on pinch hitter Robert Fick’s base hit scoring Marlon Byrd.   Neither starter; Brett Myers (4-2) or Tony Armas (6-3) were in volved in the decision as Nationals reliever Chad Cordero (2-1) nailed the win while Clay Condrey (1-1) was charged with the loss.

On Saturday, Phils starter Cory Lidle (4-5) and Nationals starter Livan Hernandez (5-6) were wrapped up in a pitchers duel through 7 innings with Washington ahead 2-1.  The Phils broke through in the 8th inning for 5 runs as Hernandez was chased giving up 2 of the 8th inning runs and getting nailed with the loss as the Phils defeated the Nationals by a 6-2 score. Washington’s bullpen gave up the other 3 runs.  The 5 run outburst featured another 2 run homer for Pat Burrell (16 HRs, 47 RBIs).  Phils reliever Geoff Geary (4-0, 2.94 ERA) pitched the Washington 7th and got credit for the win while Arthur Rhodes (0-1) and Tom Gordon (2-2, S18) finished out the game in relief for the Phils.

Today, Phils starter Cole Hamels (1-0) attempted to gain his 2nd win vs Shawn Hill (0-1) for the Nationals in the getaway game.

The Nationals jumped all over Hamels for 3 runs in the 3rd inning, 1 run in the 4th and 2 more in the 8th inning on solo homers by Robert Fick (1 HR) and Daryl Ward (4 HRs) as the Phillies’ bats had a bad off-night getting just 3 hits.  Nationals starter Shawn Hill breezed through 7 innings for his first victory and combined with two relievers in shutting out the Phils 6-0.
