The Phillies losing streak hit 5 as they lost their opener with the AL East last place Tampa Bay Devil Rays by a 10-4 score. The Phils dropped below .500 as a result of the loss. They had not been beneath .500 since they were 13-14 on May 3.
The Devil Rays jumped on Phils rookie lefthander and losing pitcher Cole Hamels for (1-2, 4.91 ERA) 6 runs in 3 1/3 innings and scored 4 more runs off of the Phils bullpen as Tampa Bay starter and winner James Shields (3-0) coasted through 5 innings and, although the Phils scored 3 on him in the 6th inning, he managed to make through got the 6th. The Phils scored 1 more run off Rays relief pitching in the 8th inning.
Tampa Bay’s leftfielder Carl Crawford (8 HRs, .312 BA) and rightfielder Damon Hollins (9 HRs) each had 4 for 5 nights with Hollins hitting a solo homer and driving in 3 runs, Crawford driving in 1. Tampa Bay leadoff hitter Julio Lugo (7 HRs) hit 2 homers, one to leadoff the game, and drove in 3 runs. The Phils committed only 1 error in the game, a throwing error by 2b Jimmy Rollins during the 2 run Tampa Bay 4th inning.

Today, the Phils start recently called-up Scott Mathieson who will be making his first Major League start against Devil Ray’s lefthander Scott Kazmir (7-4).
The Phils had best turn things around quickly and get some momentum, for after today’s and Sunday’s games with Tampa Bay because following the Devil Rays, the New York Yankees come into Philly for 3 games on Monday through Wednesday followed by a 3 game trip to Boston on Thursday through next Saturday. Either the Phils put something together now or, by the end of next weekend, they may just end up looking up, from beneath, at the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals in the NL East.
