It may not have been a sweep of the Mets or Yankees, but the Phils 8-5 win over Tampa Bay was a break-out of sorts.
For a change, the Phils got out of the first inning unscathed and came back after the Rays scored 1 in the 2nd inning and 2 in the 3rd off of starter and winning pitcher Ryan Madison (7-4) on a solo homer by rightfielder Russell Branyan (8 HR) and another homer, a 2 run shot by leftfielder Carl Crawford (10 HRs,.315 BA), his 3rd homer in series. Crawford has killed Phillies pitching.

The Phils were able to string some singles together in their 3rd to score 2 runs off of Rays’ starter and losing pitcher Seth McClung (2-10).
In the Phils 5th, 2nd baseman Chase Ultey (12 HRs, 41 RBIs, .297 BA) singled home Jimmy Rollins (9 HRs) with the tying run. After Bobby Abreu (8 HRs, 49 RBIs, .293 BA) walked, 1st baseman Ryan Howard (23 HR, 59 RBIs, .291 BA) took McClung downtown with a 3-run opposite field homerun to left. Phils 6, Rays 3.

The Rays managed a run in the 7th inning and the Phils came back with 2 in their 7th as the Phils finished the inning leading 6-4.
In the 8th, Arthur Rhodes (0-1), who followed Rheal Cormier (2-1, 1.12 ERA) who finished the 7th in relief of Madison, ran into trouble as the Devil Rays paraded 5 pinch hitters up to the plate. Rhodes managed only one out. The Rays scored 1 run and then Tom Gordon (2-2, 1.52 ERA, S19) came in to get the side out.. Gordon finished the game and earned his 19th save.

Today, the Phils welcome the New York Yankees to town for 3 games as Brett Myers (4-3) goes against Randy (Big Unit) Johnson (8-5) in the opener. Let’s hope that the Phils can come up with some momentum and a head of steam.
