Phils Return to Losing Ways, Drop Opener to Toronto …

The Toronto Blue Jays lit into newly acquired Phils starter and losing pitcher Adam Bernero (0-1) for 4 runs each in the first and 2nd innings as Blue Jays starter and winning pitcher against Casey Janssen (6-6) spread out 5 hits and 2 walks while pitching 6 scoreless innings as Toronto defeated the Phils 8-1 in their series opener.

The 4 run Toronto first inning featured a 3 run homer by 1st baseman by Lyle Overbay (14 HR’s, 48 RBIs, .301 BA), the first of his 2 homers in the game. Toronto added 4 more runs in the 2nd inning featuring lead-off hitter, rightfielder Eric Hinske’s (5 HRs) solo blast and Overbay’s 2nd homer of the game with one on. The Phils bullpen took over in the 3rd inning and shut the door on the Blue Jays for the remaining 6 innings allowing but 3 hits and 1 walk but the damage had been done.

The Phils managed but 1 run on 2 hits off of the Toronto bullpen although they were recipient of 4 Toronto walks. Dave Dellucci (6 HRs, .319 BA) accounted for the Phils only run with a solo blast off of Toronto reliever Jason Frasor (2-1) in the 7th inning.
