Phils Win 2nd Straight, Beat Padres in Opener …

The San Diego Padres jumped out to an early 2-0 with a run in the 1st inning and 1 in the 4th as Cole Hamels (1-4) was pulled after rained delayed the game, having pitched 2 innings and 42 pitches.

But the Phils unloaded on San Diego starter Clay Hensley (5-6) for 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take a 5-2 lead. The inning featured a 2 run single by 1st baseman Ryan Howard (28 HRs, 71 RBIs, .287 BA) and a 2 run homer by rookie catcher Carlos Ruiz. It was the first major league homer for Ruiz.

San Diego came back to tie the game with a 2 run single in the 7th inning by leftfielder Eric Young and and a 2 out RBI single by 2nd baseman Josh Barfield (5 HRs, .269 BA) off of closer Tom Gordon (3-3, 2.02 ERA, S21). It was Gordon’s 2nd blown save of the season.

In the 9th inning, the Phils scored the game winner on a 1 out RBI basehit by centerfielder Aaron Rowand (8 HRs) which scored Ryan Howard who opened the inning with a basehit and advanced to 2nd base on a groundout. Tom Gordon emerged as the winning pitcher while Padres reliever Cia Meredith (1-1) was charged with the loss.
