Phils Lose to Padres on 9th Inning Homer …

The Philies got a solid 3 run, 6 hit pitching effort over 8 innings from rookie Scott Mathieson (0-2), despite a 2 run homer by Padres starter Jake Peavy (4-8) , and came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game in the 8th, but lost on a Padres 3 run homer in the 9th. Mathieson’s performance was by far his best since being called up 3 weeks ago.

Peavy also pitched 7 solid innings, only giving up 1 run as Aaron Rowand (8 HRs) doubled and scored on a passed ball in the 2nd, before being charged with 2 runs as the Phils tied the game in the 8th on a 1 RBI double by 2nd baseman Chase Utley (16 HRs, 50 RBIs, .305 BA) and a forced run on a double play grounder.

In the 9th, after the Padres got a single and a walk from Arthur Rhodes who relieved Mathieson, Tom Gordon (3-3, S21) was brought in to spell Rhodes. Gordon promptly gave up a 3 run homer to leftfield by shortstop Khalil Greene (11 HRs, 45 RBIs) to provide the winning margin in the Padres 6-3 victory.

Padres reliever Scott Linebrink (6-2) was credited with the win although he blew a save opportunity in the 8th inning and Phils reliever Arthur Rhodes was charged with the loss. Trevor Hoffman (0-1, S21) was credited with a save.
