The Phils jumped out to an early 3 run lead with 1 in the 1st inning and 2 in the 2nd inning off of Chan Ho Park (6-4). But the Padres starter and winning pitcher Park settled down, in a big way, holding the Phils scoreless on but 4 hits through the rest of his 7 innings of work. With the help of Padres reliever Scott Linebrink (6-2) and closer Trevor Hoffman (0-1, S22) who was credited with a save, the Phils were shut down totally in the 8th and 9th innings as San Diego won 5-3.

After the Phils got off to the early 3-0 lead, the Padres scored single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings off of Phils starter and losing pitcher Ryan Madison (8-6), and 3 runs in the 5th inning as Madison gave up the game winner on a wild pitch. The Phils bullpen took over and shut down the Padres over the last 4 innings on 4 hits and 2 walks. There were no home runs in the game, but the Phils made 3 inconsequential defensive errors.

The Phils entertain the NL Central cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh Pirates today for a weekend series to complete their homestand. The Pirates have tapped Ian Snell (7-6) to go against Phils starter Jon Lieber (3-5) who has just came off of the disabled list.

This 3 game series is particularly important for the Phils who literally need a series sweep to begin to creep back to the .500 level and above. Loss of more than 1 game in this series could as much as tank the season for the Phillies. The Phils, while currently in 2nd place behind the Mets, are themselves only 1 1/5 games removed from the NL East cellar.
