The Phillies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning on the Pittsburgh Pirates and scored 2 more in the  3rd and were never caught as starter and winning pitcher Cory Lidle (5-7) pitched 6 solid innings giving up 2 runs on 6 hits before the bullpen took over and closed the door on Pittsburgh on just 2 more hits over the final 3 innings of the game as the Phils evened up the series at a game apiece with a 6-2 win.

The Phils scored 4 in the 1st as leftfielder Pat Burrell (19 HRs, 57 RBIs), centerfielder Aaron Rowand (8 HRs), 3rd baseman David Bell (4 HRs) and catcher Chris Coste (6 RBIs, .300 BA) all singled in a run each.  Then in the 3rd inning, Coste singled in 2 more runs (3 RBIs for the game) to close out the Phillies scoring as Pittsburgh’s starter and losing pitcher Paul Maholm (3-8) gave 6 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks in his 4 innings of work.  The Buc’s bullpen closed down the Phillies over the remaindr of the game on 1 hit and 2 walks.  This was the 3rd consecutive homerless game for the Phils.

The Pirates scored single runs in the 2nd inning, as catcher Ronny Paulino singled in a run, and in the 6th inning as leftfielder Jason Bay (21 HRs, 65 RBIs, .280 BA) solo homered to center.

Today, the Phils try to walk away with a 2 out of 3 win series for change as their lefthanded rookie Cole Hamels (1-4) tries yet again for his 2nd Major League win going against Bucs lefthander Zach Duke (5-7). 

After this game, the Phils break for the 4 day All Star break before flying out west for begin a road swing on Friday playing 3 games against the San Francisco Giants and 3 against the San Diego Padres.
