Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants was the starting pitcher for the National League on his home turf, at the Polo Grounds on July 10, 1934, 72 years ago today, in the 2nd All Star game in Major League Baseball history.
Hubbell was not a strike out artist, his highest career seasonal strikeouts total was 159 in 1937 which was the league high that year. But in this game, Hubbell had all of his stuff working at peak levels.

After 2nd baseman Charlie Gehringer singled, taking 2nd base on a throwing error, outfielder Heinie Manush walked, 2 on noone out. Hubbell then proceeded to strike out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. As Gehrig struck out, Manush and Gehringer fashion a double-steal. Runners are now at 2nd and 3rd base with 2 outs. Hubbell then struck out baseman Jimmy Foxx to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 1st, the National League put a run on the board and entered the AL 2nd inning leading 1-0.
Hubbell got the first 2 outs of the inning making short work out of outfielder Al Simmons and shortstop Joe Cronin striking them out too. Then catcher Bill Dickey singled. However, Hubbell then struck out AL starting pitcher Lefty Gomez to retire the side. In striking out 6 hitters in his first 2 innings of work, 5 of them in a row, Hubbell set 2 All Star game strikeout records which stand to this day.
The Nationals could manage nothing in their 2nd and went into the 3rd still leading 1-0. Hubbell got Gehringer to fly out and Manush to ground out before walking Ruth. Gehrig then flied out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 3rd, the Natonals scored 3 runs as they pinch hit for Hubbell.
After that, the fortunes of the National League took a turn for the worse as the AL scored 2 runs in the 4th, 6 in the 5th and 1 more in the 6th, with the NL answering with 3 runs in the 5th. The final score was AL 9-7 over the NL. the AL would go on to win 13 of the first 17 All Star Games through 1950.
