The Phillies and starter Ryan Madison (8-7) were in a tight 3-2 game with  San Diego going into the Padres 6th inning when the roof fell in on losing pitcher Madison.

1st baseman Adrian Gonzalez (18 HRs, 49 RBIs, .287 BA) doubled in 2 runs, 3rd baseman Geoff Blum (1 HR) doubled in Gonzalez and 2nd baseman  Josh Barfield (5 HRs, .304 BA) tripled scoring Blum as the Padres broke the game open with a 7-2 lead. 

The Padres opened the scoring in the 1st inning as centerfielder Mike Cameron (12 HRs) belted a 2 run home to put the Padres in front 2-0 after 1 inning.  The Phils tied with single runs as centerfielder Aaron Rowand (9 HRs) solo homered in the 2nd inning and shortstop Jimmy Rollins (10 HRs) likewise solo homered in the 3rd.  But Padres catcher Mike Piazza (14 HRs, 43 RBIs, .295 BA) put the Padres up for good with a solo homer in the San Diego 4th.

The Phils rallied in the 7th as Padres starter and winning pitcher Clay Hensley (6-7) left the game after 6 good innings having given up only 2 runs to the Phils. Chase Utley (16 HRs, 56 RBIs, .316 BA), hitting safely in his career high 20th consecutive game, singled scoring 2 runs and Bobby Abreu (8 HRs, 61 RBI(s, .287 BA) scored him with a long double to left centerfield.  7-5 Padres after 7 innings.  The Phils scored 1 more run in the 8th as pinch hitter Shane Victorino (4 HRs, .273 BA) drove in 3rd baseman  David Bell (5 HRs, 30 RBIs, .268 BA) who had tripled.  7-6 Padres.

In the Padres 8th inning, reliever Arthur Rhodes (0-3, S1) entered the game after the previous Phils relievers held Padres scoreless.  Rhodes was roughed up for 3 runs in 1/3 inning in another less than stellar relief appearance as leadoff hitter leftfielder Dave Roberts (2 HRs, .293 BA) drove in 2 runs with a ground rule double and Adrian Gonzalez scord from 3rd base as pinch hitter Josh Bard (5 HRs, .362 BA) was hit by a pitch with the bases jammed.  That completed the scoring for both teams.

Today, the Phils try to salvage one game from this series as Jon Lieber (3-7) goes against Padres’ Mike Thompson (3-2).
