Phils rookie starter Scott Mathieson (1-3) and Mets’ starter Jim Maine (2-3, 2.45 ERA) engaged in a pitchers duel for 3 innings before the roof fell in on Mathieson in the 4th inning as the Mets defeated the Phillies by an 8-1 score and took their series winning 2 of the 3 games.
For the first 3 innings, the Phils managed 2 hits while the Mets had one, but there were goose-eggs on the scoreboard. In the Mets 4th however, Mathieson unraveled as 3rd baseman David Wright (22 HRs, 82 RBIs, .308 BA) doubled in a run, another run scored as 2nd baseman Jose Valentin (12 HRs, 44 RBIs, .288 BA) reached on a grounder to the pitcher and Mathieson’s throwing error as the ball dribbled off of 1st baseman Ryan Howard’s (38 HRs, 99 RBIs, .291 BA) glove. Rightfielder Lastings Milledge (3 HRs) singled in a run followed by Jose Reyes’ (11 HRs, 51 RBIs, .294 BA) grand slam homer, the Met’s 1st slam of August after 5 slams in July. Reliever Rick White (1-0) then relieved losing pitcher Mathieson and retired the side in the 4th. 7-0 Mets.
The Mets added an 8th run in the 5th inning as Valentin solo homered off of Phils reliever Brian Sanches (0-0). The Phils bullpen then shut down the Mets the rest of the way.
In the meantime, Mets starter and winning pitcher Jim Maine was sailing along pitching 6 shut-out innings with the Phils only threatening getting 2 men on in each of the 5th and 6th innings with Maine escaping both situations. He extending his scoreless string to 23 consecutive innings as the Phils bats were mostly three sheets to the wind.
Maine was relieved in the 7th inning by lefthanded reliever Royce Ring (0-0) who was greeted by Mike Lieberthal’s (3 HRs, 19 RBIs) leadoff solo homer, the Phils only run in the game. Although they threatened with runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out in the 7th, Ring got the side out in the 7th and no other Phils reached base in the 8th or 9th innings.

[…] However, we shouldn’t become too overly exuberant as this is not the first series in which the Phils opened with a victory and then went into an offensive shell for rest of the series. We just have to look back to the recently completed Cincinnati series, as well as last week’s Mets series in Shea (click here and here) and the late July series with the Atlanta Braves (click here and here) to see a pattern.
