I woke this morning and checked out the baseball scene to see that the Mets acquired rightfielder Shawn Green from Arizona.

Green had previously been with the Toronto Blue Jays for 7 years, with the L.A. Dodgers for 5 years, including his greatest year in 2001 where he belted 49 homers, drove in 125 runs and sported a .297 BA. He played for Arizona in 2005 and until acquired by the Mets this season.
And so, the post-trade deadline deals continue as teams scurry around in the annual Major League Baseball mid and late August rite: dumping salaries and picking up late-season steals, future prospects or that one piece to the puzzle, that one bat or arm that proves a title-clincher down the stretch.

At the end of July, Abreu and Lidle were traded by the Phils to the Yanks and David Bell traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in deals reported here on July 31, 2006. The Yanks also acquired journeyman catcher Sal Fasano from the Phils.
On August 1, the Phils traded relievers Rheal Cormier and Ryan Franklin to Cincinnati for prospect starter Justin Germano.
But the Phillies are not the only ones who have made deals. The Boston Red Sox picked up catcher Javy Lopez from Baltimore and sending 26 year-old outfielder prospect Adam Stern to the Orioles in return.

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired 31 year old starting pitcher Livan Hernandez from the Washington Nationals in exchange for Double A pitchers Matt Chico and Garrett Mock.
The St. Louis Cardinals obtained 32 year old veteran outfielder Preston Wilson who received his release from the Houston Astros.

And finally, the Phillies acquired veteran lefthander Jamie Moyer and cash from the Seattle Mariners where he spent the last 10 seasons, in exchange for a couple of minor league pitching prospects. He replaces rookie right-hander Scott Mathieson on the roster. Mathieson has struggled since the Phillies called him up from Double-A Reading. Mathieson is 1-4 with a 7.23 ERA in eight games. He didn’t reach the fifth inning in four of his seven starts. Moyer’s dividends have already started to cash in as won his first game in a Phillies uniform as they defeated the Cubs 6-3 on Tuesday.
Baseball’s musical chairs continue and August is not over yet. And in September, the roster size expands to 40 players for the stretch. Stay tuned…
