Newly acquired 43 year old veteran lefthander Jamie Moyer (7-12) won his first start pitching 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits striking out 4 and walking 1 as the Phillies went one up on .500 (63-62) in taking game 2 of their 4 games series with the Chicago Cubs by a 6-3 score. Through 4 1/3 innings Moyer flirted with a no-hitter.
The Phils jumped off to an early 3-0 lead on rookie lefthander and losing pitcher Ryan O’Malley (1-1) scoring 1 run in the 1st inning on Pat Burrell’s (23 HRs, 76 RBIs, .260 BA) bases loaded ground out. In the 3rd inning, shortstop Jimmy Rollins (19 HRs, 58 RBIs, .279 BA) drove in a run with a triple and 1st baseman Ryan Howard (43 HRs, 112 RBIs, .293 BA) drove in Rollins with a ground out to 1st base.
With 2 gone in the Phils 5th, O’Malley left the game in the fifth with a strained left elbow, and will be re-evaluated Wednesday. Since being signed in 2002, the left-hander has never been on the DL.
In the Cubs 5th inning, centerfielder Juan Pierre (1 HR, 28 RBIs, .287 BA) drove in 2 runs off of Moyer. 3-2 Phillies after 5 innings.
In the Phillies 6th inning, Pat Burrell doubled in a run, as did rightfielder David Dellucci (12 HRs, 34 RBIs, .325 BA). Centerfielder Shane Victorino (6 HRs, 35 RBIs, .270 BA) capped the Phils scoring with an RBI single. All 6th inning runs were charged to reliever Glendon Rusch (3-8).
In the Cubs’ 6th inning, catcher Henry Blanco (5 HRs, 26 RBIs) drove in the final Cubs run with a single.
The two bullpens closed down the opposition in the final 3 innings. Phils reliever Ryan Madison (10-8, S1) was credited with his first save of the season.
