Enroute to Robin Roberts’ 28-7 1952 season, easily the greatest season of his career, he completed this game (Sept. 6, 1952) against the then Boston Braves. It was the 1st game of a doubleheader. Just how dominating was Roberts in 1952? Check out the stats, 28-7, .800 winning percentage, 2.59 ERA, 37 games started, 30 complete games, 330 innings, 22 home runs given up, only 45 walks issued (average 1.2 walks per game, .13 walks per inning) the entire season — phenomenal stats in any era.
Roberts and the Phillies trailed in the game by a 6-2 score after 8 innings. But the Phils tied the game at 6 and Robbie went the distance pitching a full 17 innings. In the 17th, outfielder Del Ennis led off the inning with a walk-off homer to win the game for the Phillies by a 7-6 score.

By the way, in the game, the Braves leftfielder Sid Gordon went 5-8 for the game. The two teams split the doubleheader with the Braves winning the nightcap by a 3-1 score.
