Division Series Day 1: Cardinals, A’s, Yankees Win…

The NL Central division St. Louis Cardinals and the the West Division San Diego Padres traded zeros for 3 innings, but with one swing of Albert Pujols’ bat, the Cards took the lead and were never headed in defeating the Padres in game 1 by a 5-1 score at San Diego.
Starter Chris Carpenter got the win, while his opposing starting pitcher Jake Peavy who pitched with 2 broken ribs took the loss.
The AL West division Oakland A’s and Central Division Mnnesota Twins were wrapped in a tight 2-1 pitcher’s duel in Minnesota between Barry Zito and Johan Santana until A’s designated hitter Frank Thomas hit his second solo shot of the game to left field to lead off the 8th inning giving Oakland a 3-1 lead. The Twins scored a run in the bottom of the 9th to narrow the final score to 3-2. Zito got the win, Santana the loss and Oakland closer Huston Street who pitched the 9th inning was awarded the save.
The East division Yankees jumped on AL Wild Card Detroit Tigers’ starter Nate Robinson for 5 third inning runs with Bobby Abreu doubling in 2 runs and Jason Giambi hitting a 2 run homer, with an RBI single by Gary Sheffield sandwiched in-between as the Yanks went on to defeat Detroit by an 8-4 score at Yankee Stadium.
Detroit got 3 runs in the 5th inning but Abreu drove in 2 more runs with a single in the 6th inning; he had 2 hits and 4 RBIs in the game. Derek Jeter had a perfect 5 for 5 game including a solo homer in the 8th for the Yankees final run.
Yanks starter and winning pitcher Chien-Ming-Wang pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 8 hits. Detroit starter Nate Robinson who was clubbed for 7 runs and 12 hits in his 5 2/3 innings took the loss.

In Wednesday’s games, the NL Wild Card Los Angeles Dodgers collide with the East Division New York Mets at Shea Stadium as Dodgers Derek Lowe goes against the Mets John Maine, who replaces the originally scheduled starter, injured Orlando Hernandez.
The Oakland Athletics take their 1-0 lead into game 2 at Minnesota as Esteban Loaiza starts for the A’s vs Boof Bonser for the Twins.
The Yankees, who lead 1-0, entertain the Detroit Tigers in game 2 as Justin Verlanger faces Mike Mussina.
