The National League LCS began on Thursday with Jeff Weaver of the St. Louis Cardinals and lefthander Tom Glavine of the New York Mets tied up in quite a duel at Shea Stadium.  Weaver actually had a 1 hitter going, while Glavine gave up 4 hits through 5 1/2 innings.

In the Mets 6th inning, catcher Paul Lo Duca broke up Weaver’s 1 hit shutout with a 2 out single to leftfield.  Centerfielder Carlos Beltran followed with a 2 run blast to rightfield to provide the Mets with their winning margin in a 2-0 shutout of the Cardinals to go 1 game up in the NLCS.

Losing pitcher Weaver was pulled after the Beltran homer and the Cardinals bullpen shut down the Mets the rest of the way on 2 hits.

Glavine, who was the winning pitcher, gave up 4 hits and 2 walks as he,  Guillermo Mota and closer Billy Wagner combined for the shutout.   Wagner, who pitched the 9th inning was credited with a save.
