Bill Conlin of TimesLeader.com wrote a scathing, overly sarcastic editorial about Phillies outfielder Pat Burrell’s strikeout numbers by way of a class-D mock “interview.”
The truth is that even though Burrell MUST work on cutting down his strikeouts, Conlin’s bite was uncalled for. And then again, as great as Ryan Howard was last season, imagine where his numbers might have been had he not struck out 181 times in 2006. The same goes in spades for Burell, and to a lesser extent all-star second baseman Chase Utley.
Here is a short list of great hitters, both all-time and recent, including Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley illustrating the strikeout disparity;

[…] Offensively, the Mets and Phillies have a degree of parity in terms of their sluggers; the Phils heavy hitters Ryan Howard, Chase Utley who had career years and Pat Burrell compare favorably with Carlos Beltran, David Wright and Carlos Delgado. Burrell however, as previously posted, must cut down his strikeouts – at least 80 to 100 and Howard should reduce his to at least Burrell’s 2006 level of 130 while building on his monster 58 HR, 149 RBI, .313 season.
