The New York Mets bowed by a 5-4 score in their spring training opener vs the AL defending Champion Detroit Tigers.

It’s only the beginning of spring training and we cannot read anything by an opening exhibition game except that the Mets didn’t say die.

The Tigers scored 2 runs in each of the 1st and 2nd innings off of Mets starter Oliver Perez and added 1 in the 5th off of closer Bill Wagner in getting off to a 5-0 lead after 5 innings.  The Mets went hitless until 2nd baseman Damion Easley singled in the third and then only hung a run on the board in the 6th frame.  However, they charged back with 3 more in the 8th inning off of reliever P. Larrison who is unlisted on the Tigers roster.

MLB’s Marty Noble reports that designated hitter Julio Franco hit a two-run single, and David Newhan had an RBI out during the Mets’ 3 run uprising in the eighth.

Tiger starter Chad Durbin racked up the win and reliever Bobby Seay, who pitched a hitless 9th inning only surrendering a walk, got credit for a save.  Perez took the loss for the Mets.
