The Phillies’ young lefthander Cole Hamels got tagged for 4 Boston runs enroute to a Red Sox 11-10 win over the Phils. Hamels suffered through 4 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks in his 2 innings and was charged with the loss.
AP’s Yahoo game recap reported Hamel’s reaction to his first inning drubbing;
“I’m glad to get that over with so I can see what I need to work on for the next four days,” Hamels said. “I just have to go out there and be myself. A lot of it was missed timing. It’s just something that guys go through. I think it’s good for guys, because if you go out there and have success, what did you learn in spring training?”
“You don’t want to have those types of first innings when the games actually matter,” he said.
Still, the left-hander was happy with some of his pitches.
“The thing I was pleased with was throwing the curveballs I did,” Hamels said. “I think I threw all four for strikes, but the umpire disagreed. I was pleased with that, because it’s been my main focus from last game to this game.”
The Phils came back with 3 runs off of Boston starter Kason Gabbard in the bottom of the 1st featuring a 2 run homer by 3rd baseman Wes Helms. Gabbard was credited with the win despite being clubbed by the Phils.
The game remained close at 4-3 until the 5th inning when the Bosox bludgeoned lefthanded reliever Matt Smith for 6 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks in his 2/3 of an inning appearance. The Boston outburst began and was highlighted by a solo shot by “Big Papi” David Ortiz. Yahoo’s recap report called Ortiz’s shot “a mammoth homer that left the ballpark and cleared a sign hanging high on one of the field’s light towers.”
Boston scored what turned out to be the winning run in 6th inning, although the Phils scored 1 in the bottom of the 5th, 2 in the 7th and 4 in the 9th in a valiant effort to tie the game.
The Yahoo recap reports that;
Abraham Nunez had two RBIs, and Jayson Werth and Rod Barajas had two hits each for the Phillies.
On Saturday, the Phils play split-squad games with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and with the Houston Astros. Scores and recaps on these and all Saturday games can be found here.

[…] But spring training is not so much about winning as it is about finding and correcting flaws, as young lefthander Cole Hamels found out on Friday, and honing skills before the regular season begins and before the games are “for tne marbles.” […]
