Two young pitching prospects wrapped up in a duel for 5 innings as the  Yankees shutout the Phillies by a score of 2-0.

The Yankees highly touted Japanese lefthander and winning pitcher Kei Igawa locked up in a duel of zeros for 4 innings with Phillies prospect Zack Segovia.  The Yanks broke through for a run on Segovia in the 5th inning and touched up Ryan Madson for a run in the 7th.  Segovia’s line was 1 run on 5 hits and 2 strikeouts in his 5 inning performance.  Madson gave up a run on 3 hits while striking out 1 in 2 innings of work.

Yahoo’s AP game recap reports on Igawa’s 5 inning stint;

Igawa allowed two hits over five innings Tuesday night in the New York Yankees 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

“It was the best one so far,” Yankees manger Joe Torre said. “I thought he was fine. I thought his location was much more consistent. It looked like all of his pitches were working. I think he will probably sleep better tonight.”

Igawa had struggled with control, leaving open the possibility the Yankees would open with Jeff Karstens on the roster and Igawa in the minors. On Tuesday, Igawa struck out three and walked three, throwing 38 of 65 pitches for strikes.

The Yankee bullpen shut down the Phils on 1 hit over the final 4 innings.  Yankee closer Mariano Rivera was particularly efficient pitching a perfect sixth inning and strikng out two, including slugger Ryan Howard on a changeup.

Phils reliever Antonio Alphonseca pitched a perfect 8th inning.   Phillies leadoff hitter rightfielder Shane Victorino was 2 for 3 getting 2 of the Phils’ 3 hits for the game and continues having a great spring.

In the meantime, as this blog indicated last week, the recent poor performances of lefthander Cole Hamels are a cause for concern although manager Charlie Manuel downplays such concern.  Yahoo’s game recap reports that Hamels was scrubbed from the Yankees start and started instead in a game against a Triple-A team;

Allowing four runs and four hits 3 2-3 innings. He is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in three major league starts during spring training.

“I’m not concerned,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “He will be all right.”
