MLB.com’s Ken Mandel reports that Phillies slugging first baseman Ryan Howard pulled up lame running to first trying to beat a double-play relay in the 10th inning of the Phils’ 5-4 loss to Washington.

Mandel reports;

Howard was apparently injured when raced to first base to beat out a double play in the 10th inning of a 5-4, 13-inning loss to Nationals. He stretched hard on the final step, and hunched over for a few moments while he composed himself.

Howard remained in the game, which was a good thing since his departure would have forced Manuel to play a pitcher — likely Tom Gordon — at first base because the Phillies were out of bench players. After staying in the game, Howard hobbled worse trying to beat out another double play in the 12th inning.

After the game, Phillies athletic trainer Scott Sheridan placed a wrap on Howard’s left leg — around his knee.  He may need to have an MRI of the sore leg.

On top of Howard’s current hitting woes, for the Phils to lose him to the DL for any length of time is not something they, or Howard himself relish.

Mandel reports that the Phils could call up catcher, infielder Chris Coste from Triple-A Ottawa, where he is rehabbing from hamstring soreness, to spell Howard should he be out for any length of time.

Howard’s name was missing from the Phils’ starting lineup as of Thursday’s 1:05 PM game-time with Greg Dobbs starting at 1st base.
