Sunday’s game was not one of lefthander Cole Hamels’ better outings, but the Phillies provided enough offensive support from 2nd baseman Jimmy Rollins, rightfielder Shane Victorino, 2nd baseman Chase Utley and 1st baseman Ryan Howard to overcome 2 errors by 3rd baseman Wes Helms to defeat the Giants for Hamels’ 4th win in the get-away game by the score of 8-5.
The 24 year old Hamels went 7 innings giving up 5 runs on 8 hits, walking 2 and striking out 9 while his younger opponent, 23 year old phenom in the making Tim Lincecum lasted only 4 1/3 innings giving up 5 runs on 5 hits while walking 5 and striking out 5 and giving up a pair of 2 run homers, to Victorino in the 1st inning, his first of the season, and a towering blast by Ryan Howard in the 3rd.
The Phils scored 1 in the 5th while the Giants got to Hamels for 1 in the 1st inning, 2 in the 3rd and 2 more in the 5th and the teams went into the Phillies 6th tied at 5.
But Hamels helped his own cause again with the stick clubbing a 1 out double to left centerfield. Rollins followed by driving in Hamels with his 3rd triple of the series and Utley doubled scoring Rollins as the Giants bullpen failed them. The Phils added an insurance in the 7th inning on Helms’ fielder’s choice RBI.
Lincecum got a no-decision in his major league debut with the loss going to reliever Vinnie Chulk who gave up the Phillies’ winning runs in the 6th inning.
The Phillies got stellar relief performances from Geoff Geary in the 8th inning and closer Brett Myers who went lights-out on the Giants in the 9th saving his 2nd game in 2 opportunities replacing the injured Tom Gordon.

In the meantime, Freddy Garcia is a questionable starter in the opener of the 3 games series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Facing him will be lefthander Doug Davis.
Garcia was involved in a collision with the Giants’ equipment cart during pre-game warm-ups before Sunday’s game.
But as Philly.com writer Marcus Hayes explains;
X-rays were negative but his availability for his scheduled start tonight in Arizona will not be determined until he reports for work this afternoon. Early reports after Garcia iced his shin had him feeling much better, and Garcia has been known as a pitcher who willingly pitches through pain.
