Phillies starter Adam Eaton had his longest and most effective outing of the season, but the Phillies offense continued its slumber in losing another tight game to the Arizona Diamondbacks by a 3-2 score. In the 2 games, the Phils have put but 5 runs on the board on but 12 hits.
The teams each clubbed two solo homers apiece and both Eaton and Arizona starter Micah Owings were equally effective. But winning pitcher Owings got just a little better run support in his 7 innings for the Winning D’backs than did losing pitcher Eaton.
The Phillies hardly threatened except for briefly in the 3rd inning, and in the 7th inning.
With Arizona up 1-0 on leftfielder Eric Brynes’ 2nd inning solo homer to leftfield, Eaton tried to his cause in the 3rd inning with a one-out aingle to leftfield. But centerfielder Aaron Rowand, who manager Charlie Manuel had leading off, grounded to 3rd base into a double-play to end the inning.
In the 7th inning, after 2nd baseman Chase Utley tied the game at 2-2 with a solo homer, the Phils put up their only real threat of the game.
Following Utley, leftfielder Pat Burrell, batting cleanup as Ryan Howard sat for a second game, launched a long, high drive to centerfield. Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro describes Arizona’s centerfielder Chris Young on the play;
Burrell hit a high drive and Young turned and immediately broke for the center field wall. He turned again a few steps shy of the fence, jumped and made the catch before a soft crash into the padding.
Then with 2 outs, 3rd baseman Abraham Nunez doubled to center and took 3rd base on a wild pitch. Manuel decided to stay with Eaton rather than go to a pinch-hitter in the situation. Eaton grounded out to 3rd base to end the inning. Then, in the D’backs’ 7th, he gave up the winning run, a titanic two-out solo homer to Tony Clark.
With the D’backs up 1-0 in the 5th, 1st baseman Gregg Dobbs tied the game for the Phillies with a solo homer to rightfield. But Arizona took the lead again in the bottom of the 6th as Brynes singled driving in his 2nd run of the game.
With the score 3-2, both bullpens put the lights out on the game in the final innings.
