Phillies starter Jon Lieber pitched easily his finest game of 2007, a 3 hit complete game shutout, and the offense put just enough together to make sure as the Phillies won their 4th game of 5 beating Gil Meche and the  Kansas City Royals by a 4-0 score.

Lieber, who had just returned from spending three days in Alabama following his son Jonah Lieber’s birth, struck out 11, including 6 straight strikeouts over the 1st and 2nd innings after Royals’ leadoff hitter, centerfielder David DeJesus opened the game with a single to centerfield.

The Phillies scored their first run in the 2nd on leftfielder Greg Dobbs’ none out RBI single to rightfield.  They scored the other 3 runs in the 4th on 3 RBI doubles;  dh Pat Burrell’s to left centerfield, Dobbs’ to right centerfield and catcher Rod Barajas’ double to right.

But this game was all about Lieber.  Meche pitched well enough to win most ballgames giving a quality 8 innings for Kansas City.  He gave up 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8 and walking 1 and retiring the last 11 hitters he faced.  However, Lieber who tossed 106 pitches for the game and walked noone, was dominant and up there where the air is rare.  Everything he threw up was working.  Not only did he strike out 6 straight over the 1st two innings, he retired the final 15 hitters he faced after catcher John Buck opened the 5th inning with a double to leftfield.

In other Phillies news, as reported on Saturday, they picked up reliever  Jose Mesa.  However, it was subsequently reported that Mesa was acquired subsequent to Freddy Garcia being placed on the 15 day disabled list.

MLB.com’s Alan Eskew reports;

Garcia…. confirmed the shoulder has been bothering him since Spring Training, but “the last couple of outings” it has been worse.
