Cincinnati Reds’ first baseman Scott Hatteberg started his career with the Boston Red Sox as a catcher, a position he played through his seven seasons with the BoSox, from 1995 through 2001.
In 2001, Hatteberg’s final season with the Red Sox, during a game with the Texas Rangers on August 6, he earned a unique distinction in all of MLB history.
Baseball Library recounts that Hatteberg went from goat to hero in the space of 2 at bats as the Red Sox defeated the Texas Rangers by a 10-7 score.
With 2 men the 4th inning and the Sox ahead 4-2‚ he lines into a triple play. Two innings later‚ after the Rangers score 5 to go ahead‚ he hits a grand slam to put Boston in the lead to stay.
In the course of those consecutive at-bats, Hatteberg went “from the outhouse to the penthouse.”
Hatteberg’s porous defense limited him to part-time duty, although he did serve as the Sox’ primary backstop after [Jason] Varitek went down with an injury in June 2001.
Hatteberg went, via the Free Agency route on December 30, 2001, to the Oakland A’s where played first base from the 2002 through 2005 seasons. He went to the Cincinnati Reds in 2006 where he was regular first baseman. In 2007, he has shared first base duties with veteran Jeff Conine.
