After rookie Kyle Kendrick suffered thru his worst start in the major leagues and the Phillies bullpen was even worse and the offense took a snooze in losing an awful 12-0 game on Wednesday, the Phils rebounded to as the offense awakened to pulverize the Colorado Rockies by a 12-4 score on Thursday to salvage a series split even though J.D. Durbin was chased in the 1st giving up 3 runs on 5 hits.  The Phils scored 4 in the 1st inning and 4 more in the 4th as Geoff Geary pitched 3 shutout innings for the win, the rest of the bullpen was solid and 2nd baseman Chase Utley pounded a 2 run homer.

On Friday, the Phillies notched a 3-2 win in 10 innings in their series opener against the NL East 1st place New York Mets as Utley’s 2 run, 20th homer knotted the score at 2-2 in a pitchers’ duel for 7 innings between veteran lefthanders Jamie Moyer and Tom Glavine.  The Phillies bullpen was one hit from perfection over the final 3 innings while the Met’s pen failed them in the 10th as 3rd baseman Greg Dobbs drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly off of losing pitcher Aaron Heilman.  Tom Gordon notched the win and Brett Myers notched his 16th save.

On Saturday, the Phils spotted the Mets a 3-1 lead as Kyle Lohse dueled with Pedro Martinez.  But once again, the Phils bullpen came up big allowing but one hit while holding the Mets scoreless despite reliever Kane Davis’ three 6th inning walks.  Antonio Alfonseca pitched a perfect 7th inning to gain the win and closer Brett Myers, who pitched the 9th inning, pitched was credited with his 17th save.  The save was Myers’ 2nd in two games.  J.C. Romero and Gordon combined for a perfect 8th inning.

Centerfielder Aaron Rowand clubbed his 24th homer to tie the game and shortstop Jimmy Rollins tripled driving in the 2 winning runs, all in the 8th inning as the Mets bullpen folded again and were unable to hold the lead for Martinez and the Phils won game 2 of the series by a 5-3 score.

As a result, the Phillies now have equaled their best mark so far this season at 79-69 and are 4 1/2 games behind the Mets. In the NL wild card race, the Phillies and the L.A. Dodgers are currently tied for 2nd place, 1 game behind the San Diego Padres.
