The 2007 season ended kind of suddenly for the Phillies.

A week ago, on Sunday, we were celebrating how the Phillies caught and tied the Mets on the last days of the season and passed them to take the division on the final day.

It was great watching the Mets and their fans squirm as the Phils kept closing and closing through the closing weeks of September.

But, a week later, the season ended for Philly due to offensive power-failure while the Rockies and the Diamondbacks get to play each other for the NL pennant, both teams having swept their opponents.

But looking back, the time period beginning with the end of August sweep of the Mets and running through the entire month of September, 2007,  has to be one of the all-time greatest and most satisfying runs in Phillies history.

As for the short playoff series, the Phils made no catastrophic fielding blunders as leftfielder Greg Luzinski or normally sure-handed centerfielder Garry Maddox did in the 1977and 1978 NLCS respectively with the L.A. Dodgers.  The only goat tag is the one which could be pinned on manager Charlie Manuel in game 2 for his controversial pitching moves.

No, J.C. Romero has nothing to feel ashamed about although the winning run scored against him on 3 successive hits which barely eluded Phillies’ fielders.  Romero executed, the pitches went where they should.  The Rockies were lucky to find the openings.

I’ll echo the sentiments of Brian Michael of Phillies Nation;

This quality team is going to be around for a while and this season was just the first step towards decade of success. Not many teams win the World Series in their first playoff experience (save those damn expansion teams). The Phillies are building towards that goal.

We should enjoy this season and acknowledge the joy that fell upon the city, if only for a week, and remember we all deserved it. Congratulations to the 2007 Philadelphia Phillies and thank you. Go Phils!

Just remember fans, the sun does still come up even if your club loses, even if the Boss threatens to can the team manager for losing the division playoffs.
