The New York Yankees fell short in another “Win One for Joe” game despite solo blasts by 2nd baseman Robinson Cano, 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez and rightfielder Bobby Abreu as the Cleveland Indians scored 2 runs each in the first, second and fourth innings to support starter Paul Byrd as the Indians handed the Yanks a 6-4 defeat to clinch the other berth in the ALCS opposing the Boston Red Sox. Byrd held the Bombers in check over 5 innings while Yankee starter Chien-Ming Wang was chased in the 2nd inning as the Indians scored early and the Yankees couldn’t catch them thereafter.
AP baseball writer Ronald Blum reports reactions of a few of the winning Indians’ players for Yahoo sports;
“This team hasn’t had a championship in Cleveland for a long time,” said Kenny Lofton, the veteran who hit .375 for the Indians. “This is just an unbelievable feeling to be able just to start this process again.”
“I got some big outs with guys on base,” said Byrd, who stranded two runners in the first and three in the second.
And if the media reports regarding “The Boss” George Steinbrenner are true, Yanks manager Joe Torre may have managed his final game in the Bronx.
So too, it is possible that A-Rod, who has left his offense in the regular season for the past 3 years, could opt-out his 10 year mega-bucks $252 million deal and go elsewhere. Advice for the Phillies; skip A-Rod — too much money, too high maintenance, too much baggage and definitely NOT Mr. October. Go for someone more realistic at 3rd base, like say, Boston’s Mike Lowell and, yeah, check out Lowell’s stats — he had a career season.
On Thursday, the NLCS kicks off, with game 2 accompanied by the ALCS opener on Friday. The pitching rotations for the 4 teams have yet to be set.
