Well, kiss one Phillies dream deal goodbye.
Both MLB.com’s Mike Petraglia and ESPN.com news services are reporting that veteran nearly 41 year old righthander Curt Schilling has reached agreement with the 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox on a “one-year deal worth about $8 million in base salary and another $2 million in potential incentives.”
Apparently all that remains in order to ink the deal is Schilling’s passing a physical exam.
Frankly, I am surprised that Schilling came down so far from his 2007 contract price of $13 million and agreed yp $2 million in incentives. But perhaps its testimony about the positive chemistry between the veteran and Red Sox ownership.
After the Red Sox declined to give him an extension, Schilling said in February that he would become a free agent after the season. He said then he would return for Boston in 2008 for $13 million, the same salary he earned in 2007.
It is well-known in baseball circles what Schilling has accomplished in his 4 years with the Red Sox; a 2004 record of 21-6 and instrumental in two World Championships; one in 2004 and the other this past season. But his velocity has diminished in recent years and he has had to depend more on guile and savvy to win. Good luck, Schill!
