Bloggers Beerleaguer and Tim Malcolm of Phillies Nation deserve hat tips for this LA Times report which has the Phillies picking up what would be much-needed bullpen help in veteran 39 year old Rudy Seanez who was released by the Dodgers last week.  Seanez, according to his career stats, strikes out one per inning of work.  Last season, he rung up 73 strikeouts in 73 innings.

Coming on the heels of Tom Gordon’s abominable opening night performance, it seemed obvious that the Phillies had to make a move.  On Tuesday morning, Malcolm reported that Philly.com’s Todd Zolecki confirmed the deal.

Malcolm notes;

Seanez went 6-3 with a 3.79 ERA in 73 games with the Dodgers last season. He’s had success in the National League — notching a 2.69 clip with San Diego in 2005 and a 2.74 with Florida during half of 2004. For his career, he is 36-26 with a 4.15 ERA.

Seanez comes from the right side, and is supposed to join the Phillies before tomorrow night’s game.

Beerleaguer adds;

He’s been a consistent pitcher and gives Charlie Manuel something he doesn’t quite have: someone who can actually miss a few bats (73 strikeouts in 76 innings last season). Seanez was said to be deciding between retirement and one more season if a suitable offer presented itself.

This is a quality pickup; Seanez figures to be a very useful option.

Seanez gives manager Manuel a number of bullpen options including both middle relief, a righthanded late inning set-up man alongside lefthander Romero or closing help, sorely needed in Monday’s game, until designated closer Brad Lidge returns to the active roster.
