Phillies starter Brett Myers was banged around early, but lasted 6 innings in keeping the team within striking distance. The problem was that the Phils offense couldn’t push runs across the plate against Washington’s Tim Redding as Redding and the Nationals shut out the Phils by a 4-0 score.
With the loss, the Phillies dropped to 3rd place, 1 1/2 games behind NL East leading Florida, 1/2 game behind the Mets and a mere 1/2 game ahead of 4th place Atlanta, all of whom didn’t see action on Monday.
AP Sports Writer Joseph White notes for Yahoo sports;
The Phillies, opening a seven-game road trip, stranded nine men on base to lose their season-high third straight. They’ve also dropped seven of 11.
While Myers was tagged early, the Phillies had Redding in his share of hot water, but couldn’t notch runs. The Phils had runners on base in 5 of Redding’s 6 2/3 innings, but the Nationals bullpen retired the last 10 Phillies faced. Centerfielder Shane Victorino, 2nd baseman Chase Utley and rightfielder Geoff Jenkins each had 2 hits with Jenkins doubling twice. But shortstop Jimmy Rollins, 1st baseman Ryan Howard and leftfielder Pat Burrell were a collective 0 for 11.
In the first inning, with 1 out and runners at 2nd and 3rd base, 1st baseman Dmitri Young got the Nationals on the board against Myers with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
In the third inning, the Nationals loaded the bases with none out and centerfielder Lastings Milledge, who had 2 doubles in 4 at bats, doubled to right plating 2 runs.
Reliever Ryan Madson replaced Myers in the seventh inning and got into none out, 2nd and 3rd hot water. Young then bounced into a second to shortstop to first double play as the 4th Nationals run scored.
Myers threw 108 pitches, 66 for strikes, although walking 3 and striking out 2, while giving up 3 runs on 8 hits. Redding threw 93 pitches, 55 for strikes while shutting out the Phhils on 7 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 2.

On Tuesday, ace lefthander Cole Hamels, going for his 6th win, is opposed by Jason Bergmann as the Phillies hope to knot the series. In Wednesday’s final, it turns into a battle of lefthanders veteran Jamie Moyer faces Matt Chico who replaces youngster Shawn Hill who, it is reported, had a cortisone shot in his right elbow on Saturday.
