Florida pounded Brett Myers for 3 homers, two in the first inning and one in the fifth and the come-from-behind kids couldn’t come all the back as the Marlins hung on to edge the Phillies on Tuesday by a 5-4 score.

In losing, the NL East leading Phillies lost a game of their lead on the Marlins which now stands at 3 games.  The Phils lead the 3rd place Braves and the 4th place Mets by 6 and 7 1/2 games respectively as they were both pounded on Tuesday.

The loss broke a Phillies 4 game winning streak and was but their 5th loss in 20 games.

The Marlins got on the board to open the game as shortstop Hanley Ramirez belted a lead-off homer to leftfield followed by Myers walking rightfielder Jeremy Hermida followed by a 2 run shot to 3rd baseman Jorge Cantu making the score 3-0 before Mters recorded an out in the first inning.

AP Sports Writer Charles Odum comments for Yahoo sports that;

The book on Myers (3-8) this season has been to pounce early, advice the Marlins took to heart. They had him in a 3-0 hole after only eight pitches.

However, Myers settled down and Florida didn’t score again until the fifth inning.

The Phillies scarcely did anything either offensively as Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco coasted until the fifth when, with two outs, Myers reached on a ground to shortstop and Ramirez fielded and threw wide to 1st base.  Shortstop Jimmy Rollins then followed with a 2 run homer to rightfield to narrow the score to 3-2.

The Marlins got the 2 runs back in the bottom of the fifth on 1st baseman  Mike Jacobs’ 2 run shot, his 15th of the season, to rightfield.  5-2 Marlins.

In the sixth inning, the Phillies scored a single run when, with two outs, a Marlin error and a hit batsman put two men on.  3rd baseman Greg Dobbs’ single to center scored one.  The other runner was stranded when catcher  Chris Coste grounded out to end the inning.

Myers got in hot water in the sixth and left with one out.  Reliever Clay Condrey finished the inning and pitched the seventh as well, retiring all 5 batters he faced.  Losing pitcher Myers threw 99 pitches in 5 1/3 innings and gave up 5 runs and all 7 Marlins hits, including the 3 homers.

The Phillies got their final run in the eighth on Pat Burrell’s 16th homer of the season, a solo shot off of reliever Joe Nelson to leftfield to narrow the score to 5-4.

Winning pitcher Nolasco left after 6 innings having given up 3 runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3 and giving up Rollins’ homer.  Lefthanded reliever J.C. Romero pitched the eighth inning finishing up the game by setting down Florida in order.
