Brett Myers could have been sharper in his 3 inning stint and Chan Ho Park followed with a strong 3 inning stint which kept him in the running with Kyle Kendrick,  J.A. Happ and Carlos Carrasco for the hotly contested 5th starter spot.  Meanwhile, Non-roster invitee Marcus Giles got 2 hits and stole 2 bases to spark the Phillies offense in a 7-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.

Myers gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in 3 innings of work and Park followed with with 3 innings of 1 run, 3 hit ball only giving up a solo homer to Braves catcher Brian McCann in the 6th inning.

The Braves, who entertained the Phils on Sunday, held a 2-1 lead until the Phils lit up reliever Jeff Ridgway for 4 runs in the 6th inning as Giles was in the thick of the rally hitting a bloop double.

Lefthanded starter Jo-Jo Reyes was impressive for the Braves going 3 shutout innings giving up only 2 hits and walking 1.

3 Phillie relievers were lights-out through the final 3 innings holding the Braves to 1 hit and a walk.

Park got credit for the win while Ridgway, victimized by the 4 runs in the 6th inning, was charged with the loss.

Youngsters Carlos Carrasco and lefthander J.A. Happ will serve them up for the Phillies on Monday against the Toronto Blue Jays.   MLB’s Todd Zolecki reports that the Phils also play a “B” game against the Jays in Clearwater with veteran lefthander Jamie Moyer and “slugger” Joe Blanton getting pitching nods.  After an off-day on Tuesday, ace lefthander Cole Hamels makes his spring training debut on Wednesday.

Rightfielder Jayson Werth, who has been out with right shoulder soreness, could be back in the lineup Monday.

Meanwhile, there could be trouble brewing in the Mets training camp.  Their ace lefthander Johan Santana is said to have a stiff left elbow which his doctor has called a “irritated triceps tendon” and is said to be certain to miss opening day.  The Phightin’ Phils Phorum notes that Santana’s symptoms are the same as many pitchers that end up needing Tommy John surgery.  Yahoo sports, however, has reported subsequently that Santana said he was OK after throwing a bullpen session Sunday morning.  The Mets have therefore decided against sending him to New York for an MRI on his left elbow.  I suspect that we may not have heard the last of Santana’s elbow woes.
