The Phillies ripped 4 homers off of Mets ace Johan Santana. Young lefthander J.A. Happ was clipped for 4 runs but escaped with a no-decision when the go-ahead run scored in the sixth inning was charged to reliever Clay Condrey. Rightfielder Ryan Church added a solo shot for a seventh inning insurance run off of Chad Durbin and 2nd baseman Chase Utley solo homered off Santana in the eighth to cut the margin to a run but the Mets edged the Phillies by a 6-5 score on Tuesday, despite the 4 homers off of Santana.
Santana emerged with his 8th win of the season pitching into the eighth inning despite being pounded and the Phils’ 1st place lead in the NL East dropped to 2 games with the loss. He threw 91 pitches giving up 5 runs on 8 hits while walking 1, striking out 2 and giving up the 4 homers.
This was a disgusting game to recap as Happ had easily his worst outing since being moved into the starting rotation blowing a 4-3 lead as the Phillies wasted a power-display at Citi Park, including back-to-back fourth inning homers by 1st baseman Ryan Howard (18th) and leftfielder Raul Ibanez (20th), shortstop Jimmy Rollins’ 2 run shot in the sixth and Utleys solo shot in the eighth.
The Mets got a solo shot from 3rd baseman David Wright, his 1st homer in 100 at bats, in the second inning and got a 2 run shot from centerfielder Carlos Beltran in the third, both off of Happ who went 5 1/3 innings throwing 106 pitches giving up 4 runs, 6 hits while walking and striking out 4 each and coughing up the 2 homers.
Condrey, who as good as gave up 2 runs in relief of Happ in the sixth, was charged with the loss.
The Mets bullpen shut down the Phils on 1 hit through the eighth and ninth innings with closer Francisco Rodriguez striking out 2 Phillies in the ninth to pick up his 16th save.
In related news, the Phillies announced that closer Brad Lidge was placed on the DL with a sprained right knee. Is this the possible reason for Lidge’s reduced pitch velocity and ineffectivenss?
