Phillies lefthander Cole Hamels and Atlanta’s Jair Jurrjens dueled for seven innings with Jurrjens holding the Phils to but 2 hits.  One of those hits was a first inning 2 run homer by leftfielder Raul Ibanez following a leadoff walk to shortstop Braves Jimmy Rollins.  With the Phils up 2-1 in the fourth, the Braves cobbled together the tying run and then 2nd baseman Martin Prado put the Braves up by 3-2 with a 2 out homer to leftfield.  The Phils answered in the bottom of the seventh as Ibanez walked and 1st baseman Ryan Howard followed with an RBI triple to tie the game and chase Jurrjens.  But the listless Phillies could do nothing with Braves relievers and when Atlanta notched 3 extra inning runs on a double and a 2 run homer, the Braves won by a 6-3 score in eleven innings, holding the Phillies to 3 hits.

With the loss, the Phils dropped back to 5 games behind NL East division-leading Atlanta and dropped back to 3 games behind the 2nd place Mets who shut out Cincinnati.

Hamels pitched another fine game.  He’s 1-5 in his last 8 starts giving up 3 or less runs in 7 of the eight outings.  And after the Braves got a run on the board in the first inning, the 2008 World Series MVP got stronger as the game wore on, although the Braves tied the score in the fourth and went ahead on Prado 2 out seventh inning solo homer.  After the Phils tied the game in their seventh on a walk and Howard’s triple, the bullpen got them into extra innings before David Herndon and lefthander Mike Zagurski gave up the winning runs in the eleventh.

In short, another Phillies offensive fiasco which you can read about in more detail by clicking here.
