Phillies Split With Cardinals, Ibanez’s Slam Clinches 5th Straight NL East Title

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Shane Victorino   Raul Ibanez   Phillies 2011 NL East Champs   Roy Oswalt
After losing Friday’s series opener to the St. Louis Cardinals in extra innings by 4-2 on flat offense despite another solid effort by rookie Vance Worley, the Phillies rebounded on Saturday as Roy Oswalt pitched a seven inning 5 hit shutout gem striking out 7 and walking none as leftfielder Raul Ibanez made sure the Phils clinched the NL East title with a Grand Slam amidst a 6 run eighth inning offensive awakening.   Up 3-0, having scored single runs in the first and fourth innings against losing pitcher Jake Westbrook and a sixth inning run against Kyle McClellan on centerfielder Shane Victorino’s solo homer, the Cards made the game temporarily tight with 2 runs on 4 hits in their eighth off of reliever Michael Stutes.   But then the Phils went to work on 3 Cardinal relievers in their eighth inning for 6 runs on 4 hits, a Cardinal fielding error and a hit batsman (2nd baseman Chase Utley, who else?) with the big blows being RBI singles by Victorino and rightfielder Hunter Pence and Ibanez’s 1-1 pitch Slam to rightfield enroute to a 9-2 win in game 2.   In the series opener, neither starter, Worley nor lefthander Jaime Garcia were involved in the final decision.  The Cards used 7 pitchers in both games, thus wearing down their bullpen, while the Phils used 6 hurlers in game 1 and 4 in game 2 as the Phillies split their first 2 games with the Cardinals with Ibanez’s Slam clinching the Phils’ 5th straight NL East title. With their split in their first 2 games with the St. Louis Cardinals and a 98-52 record with 12 games to play, the Phillies’ clinched their 5th consecutive NL East title by virtue of Atlanta’s loss in a rout on Friday to the  Mets.   The Braves remained 4 1/2 game ahead of St. Louis in the NL Wild Card race.   So far, the Phils are the only NL divsion leaders to have clinched.     The AL Central division leading Detroit Tigers also clinched on Saturday.

In Friday’s opener, the Cards threatened in the second inning as Worley gave up a single and walked 3, the last walk forcing in a run.  Things could have been much worse with 1 out, but Worley settled down getting a strikeout and coaxing a fielder’s choice grounder to end the inning.  The Phillies answered in their second nearly chasing Garcia on back-to-back doubles and 4 straight hits.  But Worley struck out and Jimmy Rollins popped out to end the inning with the score knotted at 1-1.   The score remained tied until the eighth as Worley settled down going six and reliever David Herndon managed to extricate himself from a bunt single, wild pitch and 2 walk jam unscathed in the seventh.   Antonio Bastardo was not so lucky in the eighth inning.

With 1 out in the eighth, the Cards took a 2-1 lead as catcher Yadier Molina reached Bastardo on a 1-2 pitch driving it out to leftfield.  Brad Lidge pitched the ninth for the Phils and managed to close out the inning after 2 Cards reached with 2 out.  With 2 out in the bottom of the ninth, and reliever Jason Motte in the game, 1st baseman Ryan Howard slammed a 2-2 pitch to rightfield for a double.   Pinch hitter Carlos Ruiz got lucky on a drive to rightfield which was totally misplayed by defensive outfielder replacement Corey Patterson.  Michael Martinez, pinch running for Howard, scored on the play tying the game and Ruiz ended up at 2nd base where he was stranded when pinch hitter Ross Gload struck out as the game went into extra innings.  Closer Ryan Madson made short work of the Cards in the tenth before 2 walks and 3 hits, 2 of them doubles off of rookie reliever Michael Schwimmer, resulted in the 2 winning runs.   Then, rookie Cardinal closer Fernando Salas finished off the Phils in the eleventh for his 24th save.  Starter Kyle McClellan notched his 12th win, this one in relief as he went clean on the Phils in the tenth.   Schwimmer was charged with his 1st MLB loss.     AP’s game recap for Yahoo sports provides highlights of Friday’s game.

The Phillies Nation blog provides these thoughts on Saturday’s Phillies division-clinching game:

The final game score… does not quite tell the tale of the game. Roy Oswalt gave a solid performance striking out seven while walking none and allowing five hits and no runs over seven innings. If this was a playoff audition, he certainly passed the test.

But with a shutout going through the eighth, the Cardinals made it interesting with four consecutive singles off Michael Stutes to close the Phillies lead to 3-2. Brad Lidge rescued the inning and in the bottom frame, the Phils decided to take out some insurance.

With a few singles of their own and Raul Ibanez grand slam BOMB to right-field, the Phillies took a commanding 9-2 lead heading into the ninth. Ryan Madson came in for the save and the champagne started popping.

As… mentioned, this is the Phils 5th division title in as many years – and to be honest, they are getting easier – at least on the nerves. Remember sweating through Jamie Moyer’s starts on the final days, watching Brett Myers close out the game? Today, rather, the club is twelve games from the end of the season and the win was an easy one.

Phillies Sweep Doubleheader From Marlins, 2 Wins From NL East Clinch

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Kyle Kendrick    Hunter Pence    Raul IbanezJohn Mayberry, Jr.    Ryan Howard   Cliff Lee

In game 1, Phillies starter/reliever Kyle Kendrick pitched five innings and 78 pitches of 1 run, 2 hit ball while the offense put 2 first inning runs up off of Florida’s Anibal Sanchez on RBI doubles by leftfielder Raul Ibanez and rightfielder Hunter Pence.   Kendrick and the Phils bullpen made the lead stand up and the Phils got an insurance run in the seventh inning on 2 singles and 2 walks off of reliever Ryan Webb, the latter walk coming with the sacks jammed forcing in the 3rd Phillies run.   Closer Ryan Madson had a shaky ninth inning giving up singles to the first 2 hitters he faced, but came out unscathed to notch his 31st save after a bunt ground out, a strikeout, and a foul out.

In game 2, All Star lefthander Cliff Lee dueled with recently called-up Alex Sanabia for six innings with the Phils taking a 1-0 lead in the sixth on outfielder John Mayberry Jr.’s leadoff solo shot, as manager Charlie Manuel rested regulars centerfielder Shane Victorino, 1st baseman Ryan Howard and 3rd baseman Placido Polanco.   Lee had another masterful outing striking out 12 and giving up a run on 5 hits although he was 1 pitch from closing out the Marlins and recording his 17th win when 1st baseman Jose Lopez stroked a game-tying solo shot to leftfield to tie the game.  Young reliever Michael Schwimmer went clean on the Marlins in the tenth to record his 1st MLB win when Howard pinch-hit in the Phils’ tenth and stroked reliever  Burke Badenhop’s 3-1 pitch to deep centerfield for a walkoff RBI double after Badenhop walked 3rd baseman Michael Martinez to open the inning.   The Phillies swept the doubleheader from Marlins by 3-1 and  2-1 scores and are 2 wins from clinching the NL East championship for the fifth straight season.

With their doubleheader sweep of Florida, the Phillies’ NL East lead reached 12 games over the 2nd place  Atlanta Braves who had the day off.   The Braves remained 4 1/2 games up on the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race as the Cards also had the day off.   The 3rd place Washington Nationals are 26 games back after pounding the 4th place Mets who are 27 games back .  The last place Marlins dropped to 31 games behind the front-runners.   The Phils magic number (combination of Phils wins and Braves losses) to clinch the NL East title is now 2 games.

One of the great mysteries of life is why manager Charlie Manuel pulled the plug on Kendrick sooo early in game 1, after five innings and 78 pitches.   His ground ball/fly ball ratio was nearly even at 4-5 and he struck out 6 while looking strong.  His performance was worthy of sticking with him for another inning or two.  His only mistake was leftfielder Logan Morrison’s lead-off solo shot on a 3-2 pitch in the fifth.  But Kendrick recovered well afterwards, only allowing an infield single and getting through the inning with a pop-out and 2 strikeouts.  Why Manuel had to unduly burden his bullpen at that point is hard to understand.  But it worked, although the 4 relievers gave up 6 hits and issued 3 walks and the Marlins pressed the Phils the rest of way but came up empty.

Although not getting his 17th win, Lee lowered his ERA to 2.38 and his gem came one day after Roy Halladay’s 1-0 masterpiece over Houston.   Thus, Phillies pitching had been scored upon but once in 30 2/3 innings prior to Lopez’s game-tying shot off of Lee on an 0-2 count in the ninth inning of game 2.   For Lee, Lopez’s hmer was only the 5th run scored against him, and the 2nd homer he gave up in his last 64 2/3 innings.

Halladay Tosses CG Shutout as Phillies Beat Astros to Avoid Sweep

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Roy Halladay
The now flatter than Israeli lafa Phillies offense notched the only run of the game in the first inning as leadoff hitter centerfielder Shane Victorino slammed Houston starter Bud Norris’ 2nd pitch for a double to deep centerfield and, 2 pitches later, 3rd baseman Placido Polanco drove in Victorino with a single to centerfield while advancing to 2nd base on the relay throw attempting to nail Victorino.   Then the next 3 Phils grounded out stranding Polanco on 3rd base.   But the 1 run was all that ace Roy Halladay needed as he was once again masterful in tossing a clutch 114 pitch complete game where he faced only 2 rough spots, in the second and seventh innings, but came away unscathed.   Meanwhile, the Phils who barely escaped Houston with a single win in the 3 game series, mustered only one threat against Norris after the first inning.  In the sixth, Halladay led off with a single and the Phils loaded the sacks with 1 out.   But Norris struck out 1st baseman Ryan Howard on 3 pitches, as Howard’s season strikeout total reached 163, and then he retired leftfielder Raul Ibanez on 2 pitches as Ibanez flied out to centerfield to end the inning and the threat.   But, not to be denied his 18th win, Halladay tossed a complete game shutout as the Phillies beat the Astros 1-0 to avoid a series sweep. With their win in the series final against Houston, the Phillies’ NL East lead remained 11 games over the 2nd place Atlanta Braves who again beat the Florida Marlins.   The Braves remained 4 1/2 game ahead of St. Louis in the NL Wild Card race.   The 3rd place Mets dropped into a tie with the Washington Nationals at 25 1/2 games back after being shutout by the Nationals.  The last place Marlins dropped to 29 games behind the front-runners.   The Phils magic number (combination of Phils wins and Braves losses) to clinch the NL East title is now 4 games.

With the win, the Phils broke their 3 game losing string and clinched a playoff berth, but that clinch in itself is not satisfying for guys with their eyes on the World Series and the club came out saying that there would be no champagne for merely clinching a berth.   When they clinch the division, which now seems a foregone conclusion, they will then probably get a taste of the bubbly.

AP’s game recap for Yahoo sports provides the game highlights:

The Phillies, who had lost three in a row, needed a win over Houston or a loss by St. Louis on Wednesday to wrap up a playoff spot. The Cardinals beat Pittsburgh 3-2.

Shane Victorino doubled in the first inning and scored the only run on Placido Polanco’s single to help Philadelphia avoid a three-game sweep.

“We went out today and played good baseball,” Victorino said. “Unfortunately, we came up short a couple of innings when we had a chance to score.”

Halladay (18-5) escaped trouble in the second and seventh, finishing with seven strikeouts and one walk for his first shutout of the season. The two-time Cy Young Award winner gave up six hits and threw 114 pitches for his eighth complete game of the year, tops in the NL. The game took just 2 hours, 6 minutes.

Houston loaded the bases in the second [third] on Polanco’s error at third, a single by Brian Bogusevic and a bunt single by Jose Altuve. The threat ended quickly when Carlos Lee was forced at home and Humberto Quintero hit into a double play.

Halladay struck out pinch-hitter Matt Downs with a runner on second in the seventh to end that threat. Downs leads the majors with 12 pinch-hit RBIs.

The Phillies spoiled a strong seven innings by Bud Norris (6-10).

Astro relievers Wilton Lopez (1 1/3 innings) and lefthander Wesley Wright (2/3 inning) shut down the Phils totally in the eighth and ninth innings, each striking out 2.

The Phillies now return home to play a Thursday doubleheader with the Florida Marlins before opening a 4 game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday through next Monday.    In Thursday’s doubleheader,  Kyle Kendrick is slated to go against Anibal Sanchez in the opener while All Star Lefthander Cliff Lee goes for his 17th win in the nightcap opposed by recently called-up Alex Sanabia, making his first-ever start against the Phils, for the Marlins.

Former Phil Happ Stifles Phillies in Houston Win

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

It may be that the stretch of games without rest is catching up with the Phillies and may be the great equalizer down the stretch in what has otherwise been a run-away season.   Or, losing 3 straight, and losing the first 2 of a series with MLB’s worst team, the Houston Astros may simply be a blip on the scope.    But either way, former Phil lefthander J.A. Happ duplicated his former Phillies teammate Brett Myers’ effort on Monday as the Phils have scored but 5 runs in their last twenty-seven innings of play.   Happ went six innings combining with rookie relievers Fernando Rodriguez (2 innings) and David Carpenter (1 inning) to hold the Phils to 2 runs on a total of 5 hits, although Happ walked 4 over his six innings.   With the Phils trailing 2-1 in the fourth inning, the big blow of the game was shortstop Clint Barmes’ 3 run homer off of lefthander Cole Hamels amidst the 4 run fourth.  Houston scored it’s other run in the first inning.  For Happ, it was his 6th win vs 15 losses.  As with Roy Oswalt on Monday, Hamels was shaky and not effective.  The Phils had Happ on the ropes in the fourth and fifth innings where they could have scored multiple runs.  But their only runs came on a 1 out fourth inning solo shot by rightfielder Hunter Pence and catcher Carlos Ruiz’s 1 out ninth inning solo homer off of Carpenter as former Phil Happ stifles the Phillies in Houston’s 5-2 win in game 2 of their 3 game series.

With their 2nd loss to Houston, the Phillies’ NL East lead dropped to 11 games over the 2nd place Atlanta Braves who beat the Florida Marlins.   The Braves still hold a 4 1/2 game lead in the NL Wild Card race.   The 3rd place Mets remained 24 1/2 games back although they were again edged by the 4th place Washington Nationals who are now 25 1/2 games back.   The last place Marlins remained 28 games behind the front-runners.   The Phils magic number (combination of Phils wins and Braves losses) to clinch the NL East title remained 5 games.

For a rare time this season, this game was too disgusting and embarrassing to waste any further ink on.   For those who masochistic enough, the AP game recap for Yahoo sports provides the lowlights of this bummer.

The Phillies hope to avoid an embarrassing series sweep by Houston as ace Roy Halladay goes for his 18th win opposed by Bud Norris.

Myers Beats Old Team as Phillies Lose to Astros

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

The Phillies had runners in scoring position in the first inning, twice in the second inning and again in the third inning but only scored 1 run off of former Phil Brett Myers.  Those opportunities were all she wrote as Myers cruised through the fourth through eighth innings retiring 17 of the next 19 hitters allowing only a single and walking 1 in that stretch.    Meanwhile, the Houston Astros took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on 4 hits, added 2 more runs in the fifth as 1st baseman Carlos Lee struck a 2 run shot off of former Astro and losing pitcher Roy Oswalt, and added an insurance run in the seventh — all 5 runs off of Oswalt as the Phils lost their 2nd straight game and Myers beat his old team as the Phillies lost to the Astros by 5-1 in the opener of their 3 game series.

Despite their loss to Houston, the Phillies’ NL East lead remained at 12 games over the 2nd place Atlanta Braves who were edged in extra innings by the Florida Marlins.   The Braves still hold a 4 1/2 game lead in the NL Wild Card race.   The 3rd place Mets remained 24 1/2 games back although they were edged by the 4th place Washington Nationals who are now 26 1/2 games back.   The last place Marlins are 28 games behind the front-runners.   The Phils magic number (combination of Phils wins and Braves losses) to clinch the NL East title dropped to 5 games.

AP’s game recap for Yahoo sports provides the highlights of Monday’s game:

Raul Ibanez doubled to open the second inning for the Phillies and he scored on a single by Pete Orr.

Myers allowed six hits in eight innings. He struck out four and walked one. Myers has allowed three earned runs in his last 22 2-3 innings.

“Sometimes you go out there and don’t want to throw a pitch because they know it’s coming or they have something on you,” Myers said. “You just have to mix it up and keep them (as) off balance as possible.”

Oswalt pitched seven innings, allowed five earned runs, struck out two and walked two.

J.D. Martinez got three hits and scored three runs for Houston. He opened the fourth inning with a double and scored on a single by Brian Bogusevic.   Humberto Quintero’s double scored Bogusevic for a 2-1 lead.

Martinez singled with two outs in the fourth and scored on Lee’s 16th homer into the Crawford boxes in left field for a 4-1 lead.

Martinez got his third hit off Oswalt in the seventh. After Oswalt hit Lee with a pitch, he scored on a grounder by Bogusevic.

“He’s a guy that throws any pitch on any count,” Martinez said. “We stuck with the approach and hit off his fastball and adjusted everything else. You never know what’s coming off him.”

Oswalt pitched seven innings and Joe Blanton made his first appearance since May 14th and since a lengthy stay on the DL recovering from an elbow injury.  He gave up a hit while retiring the Astros on 11 pitches in the eighth inning.   Myers’ win upped his record to 5-13 for the season.

The Phillies try to get back on the winning track against the Astros in game 2 in a battle of lefthanders as  Cole Hamels is opposed by another former Phil J.A. Happ who also has an unseemly 2011 mark of 5-15.

Brewers Edge Phillies to Avoid Series Sweep

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Trailing by 1-0 and held to 1 hit and 3 baserunners through five innings, Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino and 1st baseman Ryan Howard solved Milwaukee’s Yovani Gallardo for a pair of solo homers in the sixth inning to put the Phils up by 2-1 in an otherwise classic duel between rookie of the year candidate.  Vance Worley and Gallardo.  But the Brewers got to Worley in the seventh inning scoring 2 runs with 2 out on an RBI double by centerfielder Nyjer Morgan, and an RBI single by leftfielder Ryan Braun which chased Worley.  Reliever Michael Schwimer recorded the the final out in the seventh and David Herndon tossed a scoreless eighth.   Meanwhile, Gallardo went seven innings giving up only 3 hits, 2 of them homers, and striking out a career-high 12 batters.  But the Phils couldn’t dent homeplate in the late innings, although having reliever Francisco Rodriguez in trouble in the eighth, and closer John Axford in a jam in the ninth, as the Brewers edged the Phillies by 3-2 avoiding a series sweep and ending the Phils’ winning streak at 6 games..

Despite their series final loss to Milwaukee, the Phillies’ NL East lead remained at 12 games over the 2nd place Atlanta Braves who were swept by the St. Louis Cardinals.   The Braves still hold a narrowing 4 1/2 game lead over the Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race.   The 3rd place Mets remained 24 1/2 games back losing in eleven innings to the Chicago Cubs.   The Washington Nationals pounded Houston and are now 27 1/2 games back.   The last place Florida Marlins beat Pittsburgh and are 29 games behind the front-runners.   The Phils magic number (combination of Phils wins and Braves losses) to clinch the NL East title is now 6 games.

Ryan Howard was 2 for 4, including the sixth inning solo shot, but grounded out in a critical clutch 1st and 3rd base 2 out situation in the eighth inning.   Leftfielder Raul Ibanez took an 0  for 4 collar — all 4 outs were on strikes and substitute 2nd baseman Pete Orr struck out 3 times being the major victims among Gallardo’s 12 strikeouts.

AP’s game recap for Yahoo sports provides Sunday’s game highlights:

Victorino led off the sixth with his 16th homer after Gallardo had allowed just one hit—a second-inning single to Howard—up to that point.

Howard added his 33rd home run and NL-best 112th RBI to put Philadelphia ahead 2-1 even though Gallardo had struck out two or more batters in four different innings.

Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks started for the first time since severely spraining his ankle on July 27. He scored Milwaukee’s first run in the second on Jonathan Lucroy’s groundout.

Worley worked around runners in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings before the Brewers finally broke through against him in the seventh and held on from there.

Ryan Braun singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh after Morgan’s tying hit….

Milwaukee’s seventh-inning rally started with a flare double by [Corey] Hart.  Morgan then lashed one of his own…

Braun hit a long fly ball off Worley that was barely foul in the right-field corner, then singled to right to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead.

The Phillies now head to Houston for 3 games with the Astros before heading home for a 9 game home stand, their final homestand of the regular season.    Former Astro Roy Oswalt goes for the Phillies against former Phil Brett Myers who is suffering through an abysmal 4-13 season.
