<p><strong>Once again, The Phils were unable to make up any ground and remained 3 games behind NL East division-leading </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/atl" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Atlanta&#8217;s</strong></a><strong> who again beat the </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/nym" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Mets.</strong></a><strong> The Phils continued to hold a 1 1/2 game NL wildcard lead on </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/sfo" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>San Francisco</strong></a><strong> who repeated beating the </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/col" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Colorado Rockies.</strong></a><strong>  The </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/stl" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>St. Louis Cardinals</strong></a><strong> dropped to 5 games behind the Phils in the wildcard race after losing again to </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/hou" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Houston.</strong></a><strong>  The 3rd place </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/fla" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Florida Marlins</strong></a><strong> pounded </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/was" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Washington</strong></a><strong> in a slugfest and remained 10 1/2 games behind the leaders while the Mets dropped to 13 games off the pace in 4th place due to  their loss to the Braves.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Rollins nailed Kershaw&#8217;s 2nd offering of the game sending it over wall in leftfield to get the Phils on the board.  Utley followed with the first of his 3 doubles.  But then Kershaw recorded 2 strikeouts and a ground out to end the first inning.  In the second, Kershaw got behind 2-0 to Victorino before the &#8220;&#8216;Flyin&#8217; Hawaiian&#8221; jumped on his next pitch slamming over the leftfield wall to notch the Phillies 2nd run.</strong></p>
<p><strong>From there, it was all Oswalt throughout 6 2/3 innings.  He threw 115 pitches for the game while walking 6 and striking out 6.  The </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=300901119" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>AP game recap for Yahoo offers these observations on Oswalt:</strong></a></p>
<blockquote><p><strong>The right-hander, who turned 33 on Sunday, held Los Angeles hitless until Blake lined a clean single to right field on a first-pitch fastball with two outs in the sixth after Oswalt issued his fifth walk.</strong></p>
<p><strong>“I knew they didn’t have any hits, but I knew I had too many pitches to get through nine innings,” Oswalt said. “I was just wild. I didn’t have any command with my fastball at any time during the game. So I had to work my slider and my changeup pretty much the whole day, and I got a lot of jam shots. That’s the good thing about having four pitches.”</strong></p>
<p><strong>Oswalt finished with a winning record in each of his nine previous big league seasons—topping out at 20 wins in 2004 and 2005. If he pitches every fifth day the rest of the campaign, he would get six more starts to extend his streak.</strong></p>
<p><strong>“I never get caught up in wins and losses too much, and I know a lot of people do. But it’s more important how you pitch,” Oswalt said. “If you throw a shutout and the team doesn’t score any runs for you, you’re not going to win. If you give up one run, pitch nine innings and lose 1-0, you still pitched a pretty good ballgame.”</strong></p>
<p><strong>The Dodgers got an unearned run in the eighth off </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7071" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Ryan Madson</strong></a><strong> on </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7725" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>James Loney’s</strong></a><strong> RBI single off the right-field wall, which would have been a double had </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7780" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Matt Kemp</strong></a><strong> not missed second base and had to go back. But Madson minimized the damage by retiring Blake on an inning-ending, double-play grounder.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Kershaw (11-9) allowed two hits and five hits over six innings, struck out 11 and walked two. The 22-year-old left-hander overtook Philadelphia’s </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6134" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Roy Halladay</strong></a><strong> for the NL lead in strikeouts with 191 and is second in walks with 76, two behind Milwaukee’s </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6248" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Randy Wolf.</strong></a></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Credit has to be given to the Phils bullpen throughout the Dodger series and over the past couple of weeks.   Lefthanded reliever </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6363" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>J.C. Romero,</strong></a><strong> as well as Madson and closer </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6913" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Brad Lidge</strong></a><strong> have all been lights out of late.  It&#8217;s just that the offense has sputtered and not supported the great pitching, as in the recent Houston sweep and </strong><a href="http://www.blogging-baseball.com/2010/08/31/phillies-bumbling-offense-falls-to-dodgers-1-hitter/" class="liinternal"><strong>the opener of this Dodger series.</strong></a></p>

<p><strong>On Thursday, the Phils travel to </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/col" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Colorado</strong></a><strong> for a single, make-up game.    </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7461" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Joe Blanton</strong></a><strong> is opposed by </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/8534" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Jhoulys Chacin.</strong></a></p>

<p><strong>The </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=300831119" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>AP game recap for Yahoo provides highlights:</strong></a></p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Brian Schneider and Howard each hit a three-run homer to power the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-4 win&#8230;</strong></p>
<p><strong>“Three-run homers are nice. It’s a good weapon,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “We haven’t done that in a while.”</strong></p>
<p><strong>Especially Howard, who had gone 13 games without a homer since July 27 at Arizona. In April, he went 15 games without one.</strong></p>
<p><strong>“I feel like I’ve had some good at-bats and good swings over the last five, six games,” he said. “I was just happy to have gotten a hit.”</strong></p>
<p><strong>Howard missed 16 games in August because of a left ankle sprain, and he’s still working on getting his timing back.</strong></p>
<p><strong>“He’s got to get going,” Manuel said.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Kyle Kendrick (9-7) allowed four runs and seven hits in five-plus innings, walked one and failed to record a strikeout for the first time this season.</strong></p>
<p><strong>“I’m missing up and down the middle,” he said. “I just need to finish pitches more.”</strong></p>
<p><strong>After being held to two runs or less in eight of their previous 12 games, including a shutout loss Monday night in which they managed just one hit, the Phillies got going early against Carlos Monasterios (3-5) and then kept up the pressure on the Dodgers’ shaky bullpen.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Monasterios gave up a leadoff double to </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6423" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Jayson Werth</strong></a><strong> in the second. After </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5665" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Raul Ibanez</strong></a><strong> flied out, </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7104" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Shane Victorino</strong></a><strong> walked and Schneider homered to right on the first pitch he saw, putting the Phillies in front 3-1.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Monasterios allowed five runs and five hits in two-plus innings, struck out one and walked one in his shortest outing of the season.</strong></p>
<p><strong>“I was trying to pitch my game, but they were able to read all my pitches,” he said through a translator.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Monasterios was yanked with runners at the corners [in the third inning] after allowing singles to </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6049" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Placido Polanco</strong></a><strong> and  </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7072" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Chase Utley</strong></a><strong> to open the third. Ramon Troncoso came on to face Howard, who sent a 1-0 pitch into the left-field pavilion for his 24th homer, extending Philadelphia’s lead to 6-1.</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7379" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>George Sherrill,</strong></a><strong> the Dodgers’ third reliever, walked three batters—one intentionally—to load the bases. He turned it over to former closer </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7613" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Jonathan Broxton,</strong></a><strong> who gave up a two-run single to pinch-hitter Carlos Ruiz, making it 8-4.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The Dodgers led 1-0 after Kendrick yielded a bases-loaded walk to James Loney in the first. But Kendrick got </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6310" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Casey Blake</strong></a><strong> to ground into an inning-ending double play to minimize the damage.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Los Angeles added a run in the fifth on </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7024" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>[Jamey] Carroll’s</strong></a><strong> RBI groundout, and Loney hit a two-run homer in the sixth, making it 6-4.</strong></p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p><strong>Mike Sweeney, starting in place of slumping </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7437" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Ryan Howard</strong></a><strong> against left-hander Clayton Richard, hit a two-run homer, his first for the Phillies since being acquired from Seattle on Aug. 4. <p><strong>Hamels (8-10) prevailed over Richard (12-6) in a duel of lefties to win for the first time since </strong><a href="http://www.blogging-baseball.com/2010/07/12/phillies-complete-sweep-of-cincinnati-with-2nd-1-0-win/" class="liinternal"><strong>July 11</strong></a><strong> against  </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/cin" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Cincinnati.</strong></a><strong> He had gone 0-3 despite a 2.83 ERA in his previous eight starts.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Hamels retired his final 16 batters after allowing </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7054" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Adrian Gonzalez’s</strong></a><strong> single with two outs in the third. <p><strong>Gonzalez had three hits for San Diego.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Two of Philadelphia’s runs were unearned. Carlos Ruiz singled with one out in the third and advanced on Richard’s errant pickoff throw. He took third on Hamels’ groundout and scored on Jimmy Rollins’ single.</strong></p>
<p><strong>In the eighth, Ruiz hit a leadoff single and was safe at second on Richard’s throwing error after he fielded Hamels’ bunt. But when Ludwick attempted to double Hamels off first, his throw was wide and bounced into the Padres’ dugout for another error, allowing Ruiz to score.</strong></p>
<p><strong>In between, Sweeney lined a pitch over the left-field wall with two outs in the seventh. It was seventh overall.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Werth hit a solo homer off </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/8425" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Luis Perdomo</strong></a><strong> with one out in the ninth, his 18th.</strong></p>

<p><strong>The Phils blew their 6th opportunity in 8 games to gain ground on </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/atl" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Atlanta</strong></a><strong> and actually lost ground dropping to 3 games behind NL East-leading Braves who were idle on Thursday.  Having been swept by Houston, the Phils dropped to 1/2 game behind the  </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/sfo" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>San Francisco Giants</strong></a><strong> for the NL wildcard lead.  The Giants were also idle on Thursday. <p><strong>Aside from the one Phillies score in the sixth, their only other serious shot that the Phils sputtering offense had to score off of Rodriguez came in the fifth.  Werth led off with his single and leftfielder </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5665" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Raul Ibanez</strong></a><strong> followed with a double putting runners at 2nd and 3rd base with none out.  But Rodriguez struck out centerfielder </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7104" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Shane Victorino.</strong></a><strong>  Catcher </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6480" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Brian Schneider</strong></a><strong> followed by lining out to shallow rightfield for the 2nd out.  Werth was caught at home trying to score on the play by a fine relay through from rightfielder </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7963" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Hunter Pence</strong></a><strong> to retire the side.  The Phils finished what should have been at least a 7-3 homestand with 4 wins in 10 games.</strong></p>

<p><strong>This is starting to sound like a broken record; the Phils blew their 4th opportunity in 6 games to gain ground on </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/atl" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Atlanta</strong></a><strong> and remained remained 2 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Braves who were again beaten by  </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/col" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Colorado.</strong></a><strong>  Having suffered their 2nd loss to Houston, the Phils dropped into a tie with the </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/sfo" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>San Francisco Giants</strong></a><strong> for the NL wildcard lead.  The Giants again pounded </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/cin" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Cincinnati.</strong></a><strong>  On the heels of both the Phils and Giants at 1 game back are the </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/stl" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>St. Louis Cardinals,</strong></a><strong> even though the Cards were edged  </strong><a href="by http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/pit" class="liinternal"><strong>Pittsburgh.</strong></a><strong>  The </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/nym" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Mets</strong></a><strong> snuck back into third place in the NL East after edging the now 4th place </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/fla" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Florida Marlins.</strong></a><strong>  The mets are 9 1/2 games behind the division-leading Braves and 7 games behind the Phils with Florida 1/2 game behind.</strong></p>
<p><strong>This game had everything; reliever </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/8702" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>David Herndon</strong></a><strong> going the final three innings because the Phils ran out of bullpen, 1st baseman </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7437" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Ryan Howard</strong></a><strong> fanning 5 times in 7 at bats and getting tossed for disputing a 3rd strike on a check-swing in his last at bat in the fourteen inning, leftfielder  </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5665" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Raul Ibanez</strong></a><strong> being sent to play 1st base replacing Howard,  get this &#8212; </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6646" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Roy Oswalt</strong></a><strong> playing the final two innings in leftfield after Ibanez was sent to 1st base replacing Howard and much more.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Over the final six innings, after shortstop </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6419" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Jimmy Rollins</strong></a><strong> belted a ninth inning game-tying solo homer to take Hamels off of the hook, the Phils collected but 3 hits and were walked 5 times over the final six innings and could plate nothing.  The Phils left 17 runners stranded in the process as Norris and a mediorcre bullpen were made to appear as Giant-killers.</strong></p>
<p><strong>I again express concern that the Phillies may have watched their season implode before their very eyes in a loss beyond ugly.  Charlie, you&#8217;ve got your entire lineup back and, again nothing.  Isn&#8217;t time for a knockdown, drag-out meeting?  Howard was not the only mass-strikeout victim.  Six other Phils struck out a total of 8 times for the game.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Herdon, in his third inning of work in the fifteenth &#8212; much more than any rookie reliever ought to be exposed, ran into 1 out trouble.  A single, a hit batsman, a wild pitch and the Astros have runners on 2nd and 3rd base.  Then, whoever came up with the decision to walk leftfielder </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6696" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Jason Michaels</strong></a><strong> intentionally with a hard-hitting rookie </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/8585" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Chris Johnson,</strong></a><strong> who went 4 for 6 for the game, up next??   Johnson singled past 3rd base to plate what proved to be the winning run.  With runners on 2nd and 3rd base, a fielder&#8217;s choice 2nd out gave Houston a 2 run cushion.  Then Astro reliever </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7800" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Jeff Fulchino</strong></a><strong> held off the Phils despite issuing 2 two out walks.  2nd baseman </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7072" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Chase Utley</strong></a><strong> was walked intentionally to get to Oswalt who weakly grounded out to 3rd base to finally in the disastrous marathon.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Blanton retired the next 11 straight hitters after after giving up a run on 3 hits in the first inning.  Then he gave up a single hit in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.  In addition, he singled to shallow center in the third but, being slow afoot, he was rubbed out at home on centerfielder </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7104" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Shane Victorino&#8217;s</strong></a><strong> fielder&#8217;s choice grounder.   With shortstop </strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6419" rel="nofollow" class="liexternal"><strong>Jimmy Rollins</strong></a><strong> at 3rd base after following Blanton with a single, Utley drove him home with his single to centerfield.  </strong></p>

<p><strong>Winning pitcher Myers similarly fanned 9 Phils while walking 1 in his seven innings.  All 9 of Myers&#8217; strikeouts were recorded against the 3rd through 6th hitters in the Phils lineup.  Howard alone accounted for 3 of strikeouts &#8212; that&#8217;s 112 strikeouts in 107 games.</strong></p>
